UPnP AV issues
« on: July 26, 2009, 05:16:07 AM »

Hi Guys,

I'm having some problems streaming video from my NAS to my XBox 360 via the DIR-655. I've pretty much confirmed that it's the router at fault - replacing it with my old Netgear router solves all the issues - but it's still rather strange because streaming to my laptop or desktop from the NAS works (as does streaming from the laptop/desktop to the Xbox).

The problem occurs when both the NAS and the XBox are directly wired to the router - the NAS has a 1000/100/10 network connection, the Xbox only 100/10, but that shouldn't be an issue (as shown by the experiments with the computers). What happens is that the XBox can view the list of videos but when you try to play, it sits for ages "opening" the file, which if it manages to do successfully will then be very stuttering playback.

I've reported this to D-Link and it's been passed on to Tier-2 support, but I've not heard anything in quite a few days, so I thought I'd see whether anyone else has had similar issues.

BTW I've tried the 1.32 firmware, just in case the UPnP fix in there solved issues, but it sadly has had no effect. All non-essential services on the router are turned off.

Any advice is appreciated!

Just had an absolutely shocking conversation with D-Link second tier support. After waiting a week and a half for a response, the first tier support just gave me the direct number and I was told that if the 1.32 firmware did not solve the issue, then D-Link had no interest in investigating the problem any further.

Obviously it's a tricky case to diagnose because it's not clear what's at fault and i don't necessarily expect D-Link to just have an identical NAS to mine lying around. But given that both are meant to be UPnP compliant, it really shouldn't be an issue and it's not particularly reasonable to be told that D-Link are just not going to look into the problem any more (and it took almost two weeks of badgering to even get that response).

Sorry to say that I'm quite dissatisfied with my purchase at the moment.

Can you lock the NAS's LAN connection to 100Mpbs?

Sadly not - the network card in the NAS cannot be configured to set the speed.

You could well be right, but it doesn't seem to happen with my old router (though admittedly that was a 100mbit router) and I don't have a way to resolve it.

put a 10/100 switch between the 655 and the NAS
see if it goes away

I just did a test where I turned all the radio and DHCP on my old router and placed it between the NAS and the DIR-655. Streaming to the Xbox via both (so NAS->Old Router->DIR-655->XBox) works successfully, where streaming without the old router fails (NAS->DIR-655->XBox) fails.

Does that provide any clues?

Have the same issue on a PS3 with upnp using an asus wl700ge media storage/router. Set my Dir 655 to auto on the network settings and also have a NAS DNS323 and set the netowork connection to Auto.

Let me see if it fix my upnp issue.

I Fixed my issues by setting my dir 655 to 10/100 instead of using 1000 on my network setting also changing the DNS 323 to 10/100 instead of 1000.  and the other upnp media server worked flawlessly

thanks all

Hi Mamurao - where is the setting to force the DIR-655 into 10/100 mode? The only setting I could see was for the WAN port.
