When to expect an official Win7-driver?
« on: July 26, 2009, 06:54:59 AM »

For a few months i have a DWA-160 (Rev. A1) and while the connection is pretty stable, i don't have the connection-speeds i expected to have (around the 100mbps) and i guess it's because i'm was forced to use the most recent Vista-driver for Win7 64-bit RC (build 7100). And i'm not so keen on using Vista-drivers in Win7, although it could work well tho for some hardware.

I have WPA2/AES-encryption and connected with the DIR-655E.

I had speeds around the 270mbps with my previous WUSB300N-adapter connected to the WRT300N-router. Win7 came later on with a Win7-driver for this WLAN-adapter, but it was a bit unstable and my router was alsways unstable for some reason, so that's why i switched to DLink-stuff. Distance between the router and the adapter hasn't been changed. It did work perfect on WinVista.

So my question is, when can we expect official Windows7-driver (32/64-bit) for this adapter?
I'm pretty much sure that this will solve my problem.

Probably when Windows 7 ships to the store in October?

Maybe only when D-Link makes the new version of the adapter or next model.

Well, i guess they make Win7-drivers for there current adapters.
The DWA-160 isn't that old.

Win7 is RTM already, so let's hope these drivers are in development right now.

Alright, tested the stuff a little bit more.

I've installed the DWA-160 on a laptop with Win7 RC (build, 7100 x86) with the same WinVista-driver.
Signal is very good (the distance between the laptop and router is around 4/5 meters) and i'm getting 300 - 270Mbps all the time.

I've got a 60Mbit internet-connection and when i test my connection on www.speedtest.net, it's giving me good results:

So, i've ordered 3x 9dBi omni directional antenna's to replace the original DIR-655 antenna's.
I think this will solve my problem, since these new stronger antenna's will give me a better signal.

hey, for the antenna you are gunna get... i have 3 antennas... although they are 7dBi, it makes a difference, but like probably at most 25% increase. which is still good, but if you are spending more than $30 for all three antennas, its not worth it IMO. :)

well the antennas i have are from radioshack the brand is gigaware. and the netherlands.. hmm better off at amazon or ebay?

well my antennas, they are $2.27 for two antennas, so i had to by 2 backs... total of 4 antennas. They are meant for linksys routers since it is a TNC connector. I had to buy 3 adapters which total cost $25. (the adapters from TNC to SMA are expensive!!!) but yeah a total around $30..

Excuse me for asking but whereabouts did you get the latest VISTA driver for using with WIN 7 rather than what's on the supplied CD?

I'm using a DWA-160 h/w Ver: A1 with Firmware Ver: 1.10.
