Internet Loss at Night
« on: July 28, 2009, 09:09:37 PM »

I have been noticing a slow decline in my routers ability to work. It usually happens around 8-9 PM and it begins with loss of some connectivity then all connectivity. I recently noticed that resetting it fixes it, but sometimes it is not a permanent fix and I have to reset again in the night, if not, for sure the next night. My surrent hardware version is A4 and firmware is 1.21. I've tried plugging myself right into my DSL modem, and I only loss some connectivity, not all.

Thanks,

Gonz

If your slowing down happens on this basis (every night at 8-9 PM) it can be two things:
1. It can only be your router if there is other activity (malware?) in your LAN that chokes the connection (or you have 'schedule' active?)
2. It's your DSL connection

The router itself has no event timer which causes it to start acting this way at a certain time. This behaviour is commonly seen with ADSL connections when lots of people come online and the overbooking of DSL becomes noticeable.

That's a likely possibility these days.

Funny you mention that, I checked the logs on the router and I notice alot of blocked UDP and ICMP type 3 from random IPs. I recently had to reformat and force to go with Windows 7 RC because I orginally did XP, but I was infected with DNSChanger trojan imminently after installing. I'll run wireshark in a couple of hours and repost what I find.
