Problem with a Dir - 655. Please help as I need it asap =(
« on: August 09, 2009, 08:02:48 PM »

I've had this wireless router for about 7 months and it' always been working fine until yesterday.  I connect the router to the modem, everything turns on, my computer and all other devices connected wireless to the router detect the wireless signal as an excellent connection, but there's no connection.  It doesn't open a single website and none of my devices are able to get connection despite them saying that the signal is excellent.  Not even connecting them via Ethernet cables work.  I connected my laptop via the Ethernet cord from the router and it says it has signal and there's a connection established, but nothing works on the internet.

I'm using a regular wired router at the moment and everything works fine so it's definitely the wireless router not working.  Any ideas on what could it be?  I already used the reset on the router, uninstalled all drivers and software with the router and wireless card and install them again and I still have the same problem.  I never touched any setting in the router's ip since the first time it was set up.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.  Thanks!

To rule out rather the router is the problem bypass the router and hook your computer up directly to your modem. You neve know they my have line problems..etc..

I already tried that as well and my internet works if I connect my computer directly to the modem or if I use any other router.  The 655 is the one I get problems with.

Can you save your settings from the router to a computers HD? You could try to cycle the power on the router and if the don't work after saving the config file do a hard reset (factory reset) pushing the resest button on the back and reload your config file if it works.

What firmware do you have? Have you set up a password on the router?

I already did a hard reset and did a fresh start and the problem is still there.  There was a password before and I still used it, after I did the hard reset, the password got erased and still did the same problem.  I added the password protection again, but the problem is still there.  I believe it had an old firmware, would installing the new firmware help?  How would I install it?

Have you had a look at your "logs" on the router status page? They may give you a clue as to what is going on.
Also on you modem, are you running DHCP on the modem? If you are try disabling DHCP on the router.
What type of modem do you have? cable, dsl?

Up in the right hand corner of the 655 setup screen after you log on it will give you for example Hardware Version: A1/A2, Firmware Version: 1.32NA

Sorry, but what do you mean by powercycle?  I'm not that experienced with wireless routers.

I'll a pic of my status screen when I get home and take a look at it

powercycle = unplug power, wait for a short time, plug power back in
