Upgraded to new Beta... Now how to undo Funplug?
« on: August 22, 2009, 02:05:28 PM »

Since the new 1.08 will have downloadable apps, I may not need the funplug addition.
(especially if they add web server and mediatomb add-ons).
I have not been able to find specific instructons on how to "un-funplug" my unit now that I have upgraded to 1.08.  I have found instructions that say to delete the funplug files from the volume_1 directory.

I have tried copying the funplug files (two files and a directory full) to a backup directory so I can delete the main files.  But I am denied access to many files in the FFP directory, especially the ones related to ssh.  They won't copy and I can't delete them.

I am somewhat experienced in Mepis/Debian linux, but not really a power user when it comes to entering commands through the console.

Thanks for any help you can give me.

Don't you think that the "other" forum, where you got fun_plug would be the place to ask fun_plug related questions?

One way to do it is to reformat the disks.

Thanks for the response, fordem.

I have thought about the "nuclear option" of reformatting the drives, but am hoping for a less drastic solution.

I have been lurking on the forum for several months but never posted until now.
Actually I was directed to funplug via a wiki and am waiting for an email confirmation from one of three forums I have tried to register. The other two I have tried have login screens, but the registration screens are difficult to navigate to.

I figured that since the two issues are related I should ask the question in multiple forums as soon as I could get acess to them all.  I hoped that persons familiar with the intricacies of both firmware 1.08 and funplug would visit both sites.

Thanks again,

If you can get to a command line, such as ssh,

sudo rm -rf /Volume_1/ffp

ought to do it.

Be *very* careful with that command!  If you specify the wrong directory, you could lose data that you really didn't mean to delete.  Do

ls /Volume_1/ffp

first, and if the files that it lists are the ones you wanted to get rid of, then go ahead with the rm -rf

Ken - go back to the wiki and take a closer look - I'm pretty sure there's a forum attached to it, and I'm willing to be the question has been asked, and answered, there.

Two things to be aware of - first, this is the D-Link support forum, and second - fun_plug is an unsupported (by D-Link) hack.

Hacking the hardware/firmware is generally not supported by the product manufacturer because it adds a significant degree of complexity to the variables that the support techs must face, and who better to support the hack than the developers.

Ken,

A "non nuclear" way of turning off funplug is to rename the file "fun_plug.
Example...

Open a console window, and go to the root directory of the drive.  Confirm the file "fun_plug" is there with "ls".

Then do:  "mv fun_plug fun_plug.txt" This will rename the file, and funplug will not start.  Heck, you might be able to do the same from Windoze Explorer if you have the root of the drive shared.

I enjoyed your page on QRZ, 73s,   ;D

you need to ssh or telnet into the NAS and do it from there.
