300 Mbps connection requirements! Please read!
« on: August 31, 2009, 07:11:47 PM »

In response to the message (300 Mbps connection requirements! Please read!) above . I cannot relocate these advertised speeds. I have the following setup:
DIR-655 router configured exactly as specified in the message with 1.32NA firmware. The only wireless devices I have on the network are: a) lenovo x301 laptop and b) D-link DAP 1522 XTREME N DUO WIRELESS BRIDGE/ACCESS POINT (v 1.20 firmware) behind which I have directly connected Roku device, directv DVR and PS3 player. The devices are 12 feet apart with no walls in between. The highest speed I have ever seen momentarily is 176 Mbps. Not sure what else to do to get the speed advertised by D-link.

I could be wrong, I think encryption has to be off to attempt 300

here're the instructions from dlink posting:

2) If you are using encryption the router must be configured to use AES cipher. In some firmware versions/models, the only way to get the AES cipher is to run WPA2. If you can not select the Cipher, selecting WPA2 only will force this cipher type.

my speed is not 300Mbps all the time but it has hit it quite frequently through a ceiling. Please check your wireless adapter to make sure that it can bond at 40Mhz instead of only 20Mhz. Intel card that supports this feature somehow disables it by default.

Also, in the latest firmware update I strongly suspect they have made it so you will only get dual channel if you are in WPA/2 AES mode. I previously had 300mbps working fine until flashed the router, I am running WEP for a legacy bridge, and now I can only get 54mbps.

Can anyone else confirm this?

I now either have to spend £40 getting a new bridge or go no encryption :(

Hi,

I want to thank the OP for this thread....timing as they say is everything....

I have been seeing 54 speeds reported by my .11N adapters and now I see why....  I had encrypted with TKIP and WPA only....  I changed it to WPA or WPA2 (FW 1.21) and AES cipher.

Presto, now my .11N clients report their connection as 300 Mbps.... The router however reports them as some other number....but at least the .11N clients are showing as .11N instead of .11G

Thanks !!

I have an N-only network and I cannot see these speeds. Not sure what to do.

Hi,

My PC clients with .11N adapters say they are connected at 300 Mbps....but the router Wireless Connections Page reports 54 or 48 Mbps speed(s)....  So who knows... At least now, for me, the router is showing the .11N clients instead of showing them as .11G clients.

I can also point out that one of my .11N clients, a trendNet wireless gaming adapter, was showing router speeds of 104 or 108, but listed it as a .11G device.  Now showing as a .11N device, it reports speeds at 54 Mbps.....

Also it seems the encryption cipher has some impact of speeds, but I can't say that for sure....more o***ut feeling.  I am no cipher specialist but I suspect the math used in the cipher process is different between TKIP and AES....thereby resulting in slightly different wireless performance....

????
