Confused about share modes/accounts/access
« on: September 01, 2009, 12:47:04 PM »

With the new firmware due to be released it is my understanding that the way in which folders are shared has changed. Namely, if you have users and shares setup you can't have shares which don't require a username and password.

Currently, I have several directories that are only available to accounts within a "Users" group. I also have media (music, videos, pics etc) accessible to everyone in read only without username/password. It is my understanding that this setup will no longer work with the new firmware.

I can create a user for the media share, but both the "Users" group and this new share will need access. I can't put the media account in the "Users" group, because I don't want the other shares accessible by the media account. Unless there are other options I'm missing, I'm going around in circles trying to work out how I'm going to support this when the new firmware is released.

The biggest restriction I see is not being able to associate users with more than one group.

Any suggestions?

You can just use the "All Accounts" checkbox for your "Media" directory. Then the users will just use the same username/password that they use for the other Passworded directories and they can access the Media directory as well.

Thanks for the quick response. Will the "Media" share require a username and password if it is set as "All Accounts" ? I guess you can't control that "All Accounts" have read only access except for a certain group of users.

The reason I ask, I have a media streamer that currently accesses a "Media" share on the DNS-323. It doesn't require authentication at the moment. If I understand correctly, I'll need to create an account for it on the DNS-323 and login with that on the streamer.

Correct.  If  you have any passworded shares, the DNS-323 now requires all to have passwords.  This is a step back from when you could have anonymous shares and passworded shares.

I'd like to see that functionality restored to the DNS-323. :)

I know when I first setup the DNS-323 I had problems in Vista connecting to shares. Even when I entered the correct credentials I couldn't access it. That had something to do with Vista accounts vs. the DNS-323 accounts I think. After I set my Windows credentials to match those of a DNS-323 account all was well. I think this move by Dlink is to combat that problem, but I have been known to be wrong :)

Well, my Vista and Windows 7 machines were working fine with anonymous shares mixed with passworded ones, then the firmware "upgrade" remove that functionality.  ::)

I know I've tried many different combinations with usernames/passwords and setting up shares, etc and I still can't cut and paste a file from one folder to another.  Always gives me a permissions error.

Now that I have all passworded shares, something that I wanted to avoid for the public folders, I have no problem moving files around on the unit.  I can only hope that the light bulb will go on and they'll restore that functionality to the unit. :)

We are trying to decide what the BEST solution would be for this particular case. Regardless of whether your setup was working, that doesn't make it the majority. There are some serious flaws between samba/vista/macs etc that we are trying to combat and this is only ONE step of the few to improve functionality between user accounts on our NAS's and connections from the PC.

As to the question above, yes if you select "All Accounts" your public share would use the same username and password combinations that are already stored in the User list. Any will work to access the public share.

We haven't disregarded the comments in the forums, heck thats what the entire beta section is for.

Well, the previously I had good access from XP, Vista and Windows 7 using both passworded and anonymous shares.  I can't speak to the Mac, since I don't have one of those.  I was really disappointed when that capability was removed.  :'(
