The newest version of Mac OS X 10.6 will not mount the DNS-323 using SMB. If you try and connect through Go>Connect to Server>smb://ipnumber it will give an invalid username of password error. If you try and browse to the server through the finder and click on the share, it will give a generic "The operation can't be completed because the original item for "Volume_1" can't be found." 

Is there a problem with the SMB implementation on Mac OS X 10.6, or does the new 3.0.28 version of SMB on the Mac break with the older version on the DNS-323?

Yeah, the version of Samba on the DNS-323 isn't up-to-date.

I'm running FW 1.08b5 on my DNS-323, though, and it works fine.  I think that's your only choice at the moment, as I don't believe FW 1.07 works with SL, and I know FW 1.06 does not.

Thanks for the heads up. Will verify but it does sound like a SMB version imcompatibility.

OSX SL works for me and i'm running the 1.07 firmware
im able to mount folders that require a username/finder..
i tried mounting this through finder and also the direct approach with "Connect to server.."

Works fine for me using 1.08b5 with snow leopard.

On a side note i'm quite surprised that snow leopard ships with such an old version of samba (v3.0.28a).

I'm not.. Apple has always deliberately had extremely poor support for SMB.  It's only been 7 years now and they still don't support SMB signing in a Windows 2003/2008 domain environment.  Reasons like "Interoperability" have always angered me at Apple.  I can make a Linux or Unix computer interface with a Windows environment easier than with Apple and it's very sad the still choose to do the "my way or the highway" routine:  iPod/iPhone, iTunes, OSX desktop/server...

got the same problem: shares are seen, but not accessable. any idea how to fix the problem? Apple does not give any commitment to help. Thank you for any hints what to do best.

Upgrade your FW is the only thing I know to fix it at the moment.

It sounds like at least one person claims it works fine with FW 1.07, and several of us are running FW 1.08b5 with Snow Leopard without issue.

ok, I will try to....but is there any risk of loosing data or access rights? What are the risks to upgrade the FW?

I have SMB working with SL.  I'm using firmware 1.07.   

Any thoughts to supporting AFP?

This solution works! My entire lab was unable to access the DNS-323 (with the 1.07 firmware) after the computers were updated to 10.6 (SL). The other lab with 10.5 machines continued to connect without issue. After we updated the DNS-323's firmware to 1.08b5 and rebooted the DNS-323 a second time, all computers could once again connect. This appears to be the best solution and possibly only choice.

I'm not sure why some can continue to access the DNS-323 with the 1.07 firmware after upgrading their computer, but it appears many can not... and of the 8 computers I upgraded, all stopped connecting afterward.

I've just run into this exact same issue. In the recent past I hit the same issue between Ubuntu 8.10 and 9.04 (where 9.04 didn't work). I still haven't resolved that issue and hope that FW 1.08b5 will solve it, But.... where can I find this FW version? It's not on the main DLINK support site and a few searches on this forum have left me empty handed.

Beta firmware won't work for me. I still can not access DNS with SL. I have tried everything, it worked fine in OSX10.5.8.

Did you reset to defaults before and after the upgrade to FW 1.08b5?
