Inconsistent wireless access
« on: September 04, 2009, 07:54:22 AM »

Setup-
Linksys RT31P2 Voip router contected to LAN (fiber) internet hookup, managing dhcp.
LINKSYS WRT54G router setup as wireless ap and switch (dhcp disabled).
DNS-321 wired to WRT54G with static ip address no user or group accounts or restrictions, latest firmware, best addition to network I have made!  One wired desktop, one wireless laptop, (both XP machines with updates) networked Dell printer, XBOX 360 wired. All on 192.168.1.***

Wired desktop and XBOX are able to access NAS flawlessly.

Wireless Acer One laptop (Atheros wireless) is able to access internet, desktop computer, and printer without error, connection with NAS is inconsistent.  Sometimes repairing network connection fixes, sometimes rebooting NAS fixes.  I have tried different configurations in wireless router, with and without McAfee running, other machines on or laptop alone, it makes no difference.  I can lose the connection to the NAS at anytime.  Acer is always able to access the http page of the NAS even when not able to access folders.

Before buying a D-Link router to run jumpstart wireless, I wanted to give you gurus a crack at this!

Thanks!

Not sure what's going on here.  I have two laptops that share documents and have their My Documents mapped to my DNS-323, and they never have any issues connecting to the NAS wirelessly.

Do you have any other issues with the wireless access to other devices or the Internet?

No other issues whatsoever, laptop accesses folders, cd and dvd drives on the desktop without issue.  I don't believe it is an NAS issue.

I solved the problem although it is not really fixed.  The computer was set up to bypass the log on screen and boot into my user profile.  The computer started acting flaky in some other areas i.e. missing icons in the system tray etc. so I set it up to go to the select user profile screen using control userpasswords2 and now everything is operating beautifully including access to the NAS.  Windows is a finicky beast at best!  ;D

Glad to see you sorted it out, that does sound like a access permissions issue.  FWIW, I always put a password on user accounts and use the control userpasswords2

Hi,

Are you using Windows XP? Because I mapped My Documents from my WinXP PC to DNS-321 with no issues but when I try doing it for My Win 7 laptop, it doesn't let me do it.

I have no problem mapping to the DNS-321 or DNS-323 from Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit or the 32-bit machine.

Every time I map the NAS folder as my default Documents folder for Win7, I get an error "This network location can't be included because it is not indexed"
