Can't Connect To The Internet
« on: September 10, 2009, 12:05:48 AM »

Hi I just received my Dlink 655 and I set it up. It can't connect to the internet. I have NO idea what's wrong with it. I have a SpeedStream modem from AT&T if that helps. I'm using Windows XP Service Pack 3 I believe. I used to use a Belkin Wireless G Plus but I decided it was time to replace it.

So yeah. I was wondering if anyone else had this problem. I open firefox and it can't load any websites. My AIM can't connect. But the weirdest thing is that Steam can connect and  I can talk to people on it. So I'm not sure if it can connect to the internet but it blocked access to all my other programs. But I used the whole 192.whatever and went through the advanced settings and I don't have any of the filtering stuff turned on.

Edit.

I just tried to install the router again and this came up, "no internet connection detected. We could not detect your internet connection. If you think your internet connection should be working, contact your ISP to troubleshoot your connection. If you want to continue anyways, click Next to configure your home network." Actually, I think I did click next the first time I installed it. So that means it couldn't detect my internet connection during the setup. But I obviously have an internet connection because I'm plugging my computer directly to my modem right now and I was using my old router this morning, so I doubt it has anything to do with my internet.

And a quick question, do I have to actually have an ethernet card? I just stuck it into the slot on the back of my mobo. It works for my modem and my old router. I'm hoping you don't, unless these "Xtreme B products" force you to buy one of their ethernet cards?...

-Your modem might require a reboot/hard reset
-the internet connection type is wrong in the DIR (PPPoA perhaps?)
-you have double DHCP, running on router and modem
-your NIC needs a refresh

Haha sorry, I don't know that much about routers.

Is the hard reset pressing the reset button on the back? I've done that a few times already.

I think I have a Dynamic IP address. What's PPPoA?

So how would I know if I have double DHCP and what should I do about it if I do have that?

What's a NIC. xD

Sorry, my previous experience with routers is pretty simple, they worked if I just plugged in the right wires into the right ports so I was never really familiar with the terminology.

Lets start with the basics and go from there.

Who do you get your Internt from?  Is it Cable, DSL, or some other?

Yahoo/AT&T DSL.

And I just tried reinstalling it again. This time I used the install disk and when it started checking for the internet connection it took a very long time and it asked me what type of internet I used. I selected the DSL option and tried the DHCP or w.e, then the PPPoA or something, and then I tried the "I don't know" option. The first two took a long time trying to check the internet and both couldn't find it and I got the same msg. The third one was instant and that msg popped up.

So apparently it can't detect my internet.

If your Belkin is still working go into that and write down the settings that it is using to connect to the Internet.  Then transfer those to the 655.

Hmmm. I plugged it back in, still works. I've had this router for about 4 years, so I don't have the box or any of it's cd's/info so I have no idea how to get the settings for it and everything. I tried the 192 thing and I go to the same page as my modem (the SBC page). I can post that info if it will help.

go out to Belkins site and download the user manual, to help you poke around and find the settings you need.

Oh god, you're a genius. Or I'm a dumbass. Haha maybe both.

Wow, all I had to do was copy in the DHCP server address. I had no idea what that was so I didn't do anything, but I guess it was pretty necessary haha. I don't get why the router couldn't have figured it out on its own considering I've never had to do that before. Oh well.

Thanks for all the help. :]

RTFM before you try having sex. The consequences of not absolutely not knowing what you're  doing  can last a lifetime  ;)
