Who wants a Downgrade to 1.21?
« on: September 21, 2009, 01:41:15 AM »

First off I am just getting fed up with this Firmware... This router is hooked in to my server and it locks up every 3-5 days and has to reboot but I dont know that tell one of my customers says "Hey I cant access any thing." Also I have noticed my wireless speed has been cut down dramatically... even doing speed test I get only around 3mbps over 802.11N and on my DIR-615 I get full 270mbps.

I am fed up and just want 1.21 back... And dont tell me you cant make a Downgrader for it because I know you can...

Who else wants a Downgrade to 1.21? I would even do it if I had a 40% chance to brick the damn thing as long as I had a chance to get this damn thing working again...

It would be nice but I don't see it happening. Let me just say I'm not a D-Link fan boy and I'm just as pissed as everybody else. The thing is, a mod has already posted that a new firmware is in development, but won't say when it might be done.  ::) If you believe what they are saying it's easier to move forward than it is to try and go back. I can see it taking a while because if they release another buggy firmware they will really be in the deep stuff. I don't care one way or the other as long as they FIX the problems.

Except that unless you make it PERFECT (and let's be honest, mistakes and bugs happen) then the lack of a downgrade option is just UTTERLY STUPID.

IF the new firmware allows one to downgrade, then I'm all happy and waiting for the next big thing. But if it doesn't, then it might just end up being us waiting for something that won't work... again... and this whole mess wouldn't have changed one bit. A stable working router is worth much more than an unstable one with more features.

So yea, I too would like a downgrade option. It doesn't even have to be automatic using the interface (I'm fine with using multiple stages and a TFTP app); just give us that option!

No thanks. Performance really sucked and Shareport was flakey. Viva 1.32NA.

I'm in for a Downgrade.  How long will we have to wait for that one?  I'm wondering if a new firmware or Windows 7 retail will get here first.

My guess is the new firmware will let you go back to a 1.3x firmware but not 1.2x or anything earlier. It will be a new cycle starting with the 1.3x firewares.

Which means if the new firmware doesn't resolve our issues then there's no progress. The terrible 1.32 can ALREADY be downgraded to 1.3x. What we NEED is the ability to go to 1.2x, or even earlier.

Seriously, don't routers such as DIR-655 come with a memory chip that can be reprogrammed? And since when can only "part" of it be reprogrammed?

Normally that is true. It's been explained why you can't go back in another thread. I don't remember which one at the moment but the gist of it is that some of the changes made by 1.32 are not undone by the earlier versions. They changed some things, memory maps I believe, that don't get changed back the way 1.2x is currently written. I think what happens is some registers are changed that won't be undone by a 1.2x firmware so in all likely hood you would brick your router trying to go back. To go back to a 1.2x like firmware you would still have re-write the original 1.2x code for it to work. You may as well write a completely new firmware or fix/build on the 1.32NA. If you hunt around you may find the actual explanation posted by a mod and then you can judge for your self if you believe it or not.

I am feeling left behind by d-link. They know what we are passing, they know our situation, but they do NOTHING for us.

I hope linksys or apple sees this and give us all discount coupons so we can put our dir-655 in the garbage and make some very nice reviews to our friends and blogs =)

Apple makes router too, and same for ASUS and Gigabyte. I heard ASUS ones are pretty good, just that haven't seen any reviews of their  ::). The top of the line has built in Samba support and BT client. Nowadays corps do a lot of stuffs.
