If you are buying at a Retail store, I think the stickers on the box will state what firmware is on the router.

If say at like Newegg.com I think you can order by phone and ask them...they may or may not have that information at hand...

If so, wait till early next year then, the certification process for final n products (with optional test) is going to be completed next month only. Then development time and testing, then FCC certification will take to next year. That's my wild guess, but I believe that's true.

On the other hand, one may wants a router now, and if it's a single band n product, the DIR-655 can be considered finalized and if necessary a firmware will do it anyway. HW wise the DIR-655 is not a bad product, as for firmware IMO D-Link is just having some rough sailing. It will pass, hopefully sooner than later.

Just got a new DIR-655 from Newegg.com today.  1.21 firmware on A4.  (RMA'd unit about 3 weeks ago was also 1.21.)

BestBuy Canada is shipping A4 h/w with 1.20 f/w.  I received a second one for a relative this week.

Similarly bought at Amazon and got the v1.21 firmware -- BUT -- there are two types of v1.21:  one with SecureSpot, and one without (which begs the question, why aren't they separate versions?  But I won't go there....).

The Amazon DIR-655 had the v1.21 version WITHOUT SecureSpot.  If you want to use SecureSpot, you can download the v1.21 firmware WITH SecureSpot from this website, then flash the router's firmware.  SecureSpot is enabled under the Advanced tab.  You won't see the SecureSpot among the lefthand menu options unless you've got the v1.21 that adds SecureSpot to the firmware.  Make sense?

If you are reading this forum, why would you even consider buying a new D-Link product?

How many other performance n routers have you tried?  The 655 running something that isn't 1.3+ is pretty solid, especially compared to other brands.

I don't the spec finalization changes much in the short term, but in the long term it might lead to more investment in newer chips that support 4x4 (double the max theoretical speed that the 655 can support).

Again, you would need a client that supported 4x4, so this all might take a while.
