DIR-655 A3 1.32NA tweaks and thoughts.

Alright first off, This is from another thread complaining about the issues with 655 and 1.32NA

...We are working on a firmware to address this issue. I can not give you a timeframe for compleation as I do not have one to give. For those of you that continue to suffer with unusable routers do to firmware failure I suggest you contact technical support and request a replacement that has the previous firmware version. For now this is all we can do.
-Lycan.
Just a reminder to those who have problems worse than i.

i flip through these threads and I don't see much talk about changes being made to your DIR-655 1.32NA. Only a few of you have posted your actual hardware in the DNS sticky thread, i've got DIR-655 HW: A3 FW: 1.32NA. Where are the log files? Are we allowed to upload/attach our configuration files for our routers? Haha..that'd be neat.

Yes this model has issues...if you were going to sell it on craigslist you would have by now. So lets work together to figure out the ideal settings, make the most of this device, until hopefully the next firmware fix comes out....or we give up and have Dlink give us new DIR-655's with 1.21 and hopefully a higher hardware version eh?  ;)

I only have to reboot my router once every 3 months. I always install the latest firmware as soon as its available. Despite the firmwares, I have always had DHCP/IP issues, so I set all 4 hard wired computers to static IP. And on the NETWORKING page, at the bottom, i setup the DHCP Reservation table for all my machines.

After 1.32NA came out, i had some issues and quickly learned that "Enable DNS Relay" on the NETWORKING page resolved my issues with 1.32NA. Besides that, i still have occasional IP issues, but not nearly as often. Overall, the router works great, I always have a ton of traffic running through it. If i had further issues, such as constant rebooting like some of you, no way in heck would I hesitate to RMA.

What I'm here to talk about is WHAT other settings we can change to get the most through-put. Me and another guy I talked to, we both have issues running YAMJ, a movie jukebox application for the PCH. Basically its a small program that creates alot of connections. Could it be the XP server? sure could, but unlikely considering we have the same router and same problem, and i can't find anyone else who does.

When streaming a file across one gigabit switch, across my dir-655 switch, and across another gigabit switch (none of these devices have jumbo frames) I get speeds of around 65-75MB a second between two computers, with a theoretical max wired speed of 100MB. (thats big MB, not little mb) Or as I like to think, ruffly 70,000K/sec. I don't care to get more than that, thats plenty!

Using the same wires and same switches, my old DLINK with integrated 100mb switch in the middle, only got 9,000K/sec. Well heck, you want at least 15,000K/sec to stream a blueray movie from a file server to a A110 Popcorn Hour without any chance for stuttering, hence i upgraded to this DIR-655 A3.

So my files, and movies, (stream for the most part) throughout my house with no problems. Once in awhile while downloading a big update or something at even 1000K/sec, this pretty 70,000K/sec network comes to a screeching halt with video freezes, and all LAN connectivity to that device drops out, i lose remote desktop, and i have to walk into the other room...that is way too much work ;) Could it just be my old fileserver running XP Pro Sp3? Quite possibly. Would upgrading that old file server with more RAM and Server2008 fix my connection issues? Quite possibly. I didn't have this issue with old router, so I'm wondering if the connection between the router and that wired pc is somehow tripping over itself.

I'm also looking forward to playing games on my new gaming rig during the cold season coming up quickly here... So im here now looking to see what optimizations people out there, like me, have made to this device. I don't care about wireless optimizations, the wireless on this device is like my sister, fast and amazing. I have only been able to narrow down the following options to be changed, please give your input on each or any of them. Thanks for your thoughts! ;D -diske.

Consider factory settings, then add on a wireless configuration, and then the following changes:
DHCP Lease Time:50000minutes. (@Setup/Network))
Always broadcast: Enabled. Compatibility for some DHCP Clients. @Setup/Network)
Enable UPnP: (i disabled this to free up traffic on the wires @/Advanced/Advanced Network)
Enable DNS Relay (i disabled, as everyone and their mother @/Advanced/QOS Engine)
Disabled Traffic Shaping. (sounds like Dlink's own way of doing QOS?! @/Advanced/QOS Engine)
Disabled QOS (Has anyone found Pro's and Con's of doing so? Or should I find a way to set the priority of my SMB share on my FileServer to #1 so movies cannot ever come to a halt again if dnloading?  is that possible even. @/Advanced/QOS Engine)

Please recheck your information on how to disable DNS Relay, you pointed to the wrong place I think. Also about your QoS issue and SMB streaming, on a similar thread, the OP said he was able to fix it by disabling Dynamic Fragmantation. This way you won't lose all of QoS benifits. I myself haven't run into this issue though, so I can't be sure if it works for you but it's worth a try. Besides, I find QoS at least makes my net surfing snappier under heavy network usage.

  I have been having the same wireless connectivity issues as many others here, and have tried every possible modification suggested to no avail. I contacted D-Link support with the following reply...

<snip>
From your email, we suggest you, the given description indicates that, you are unable to get a stable wireless link between the router/access point and the PC housing the wireless adapter. Probable causes for the same could include wireless interference from 2.4GHz cordless phones, X-10 devices, other wireless networks, physical constraints e.t.c
</snip>

  Here's my question based on their reply, and i will preface it by saying that the router functioned perfectly with the 1.2 series firmware. Am i supposed to change my cordless phone system, my alarm company, my microwave and my brand hew Logitech mouse/keyboard combo touting their new "2.4G technology" all because of the inability to correct the 1.3 series firmware?

  I am far too stubborn to cave to incompetence on behalf of D-Link and do as many others have done and buy another company's router. Why should i be spending my hard earned money because D-Link can't fix THEIR problem. The least that they can do is provide us with a way to return to 1.2 firmware without having to resort to some Russian web site and it's malicious potential.

  Either fix it, give me a new one, or is there not someone with the common problems and a law degree that would be willing to launch a class action suit?

  Thanks for the reply Dave. I have been having this issue since the first 1.3 firmware beta update, and have updated every version since.

You don't say what you are using for a wireless nic card, it may the the card that is at issue or you may need to lock in a specific channel if you have other 2.4 gHz broadcasts in your area.

This issue is happening on 5 different machines, 3 Dell's running the Dell Wireless 1505 Draft 802.1 Draft N WLAN Minicard, one mac (not sure the card), the one Dell running D-Link Wireless N Nano USB Adapter 2.4GHZ 802.1. We have updated all cards with the latest drivers and are getting speeds of up to 9 Mbps, ping rate of 5ms, and minimum signal strength of 88%.

I have also tried using channels 1,6, and 11 as suggested in prior connectivity issues. Please note that i have not taken to posting this issue lightly, but this is my last atempt before replacement, as we are in the process of going live shortly and cannot afford to have our machines losing connextion at important ftp processes.

@OP

There are some links in this forum that will take you to a russian firmware v1.31 which has been patched to allow downgrading. The file I downloaded resided @ dslreports.

I downloaded this patched v1.31 firmware. I downloaded the official dlink v1.21 (no shareport) firmware. I flashed the 1.31. Reboot. Flashed the 1.21 firmware. Viola, all the issue I was experiencing on v1.32NA have gone away. v1.21 firmware works the best for my needs. Until there is a reason for me to upgrade, I don't see a reason to do so.

HTH.

@Sully...

  Although this wasn't directed at me, I appreciate the feedback. This patch has been well documented within the forum, but my point in another thread has been that due to numerous complaints, why hasn't D-Link "officially" given their users the choice, and thus an "authorized" link to the downgrade. Call me skeptical, but links though 3rd party concern me, particularly ones that involve a sensitive piece of network security like a router.

Your concern is absolutely valid. Updating a router with hacked firmware potentially opens up your device to major security issues.

You also might want to seriously consider that there is an issue in your environment that causes all machines to experience this behaviour? What have you already done to rule that out?

You also might want to seriously consider that there is an issue in your environment that causes all machines to experience this behaviour? What have you already done to rule that out?

According to an email from a D-Link rep Case ID: DLK400969439 stated in another thread that you have already sarcastically replied to:

"From your email, we suggest you, the given description indicates that, you are unable to get a stable wireless link between the router/access point and the PC housing the wireless adapter. Probable causes for the same could include wireless interference from 2.4GHz cordless phones, X-10 devices, other wireless networks, physical constraints e.t.c

If you are using 2.4GHz cordless phones or X-10 (wireless products such as ceiling fans, lights, and home security systems), your wireless connection will degrade dramatically or drop completely. Anything using the 2.4Ghz frequency will interfere with your wireless network,"

This point really sticks with me. Are they really suggesting that I change everything in my environment that runs on 2.4 (phone system, wireless computer peripherals, alarm) in order to accommodate dropped network connections, or did they not think of that? To stress my point, it worked fine with the firmware version 1.2

Lets look at this with some common sense for a moment, shall we?

The questions here are basic:

1. why hasn't Dlink provided a means to go back to previous firmwares (like the patched russian one allows) and/or why hasn't Dlink simply responded or provided a fix?

2. should you trust a patched 3rd party firmware?

_____________________________________________________________

The answer to #1 is quite simple most likely. Dlink sinks money into areas where money will come back from. Simple really. If 100,000 units are sold, and only 100 people complain, why would you sink money into a problem that is really non-existent?

Why would you spend money to give flexibility when you don't have to for the majority? It makes not much $$ sense to do it.

The answer to #2 is not a clear cut as some would believe.

Why is using a 3rd party firmware for a router any different than a 3rd party for my mainboard BIOS or my video adapter BIOS? Why is 3rd party considered more "detrimental" than a beta version from the manufacturer that carries with it a warning?

Why should anyone even flash firmware in the first place unless there is a very specific need to? Why does a product ship out with firmware that is going to need fixing? Sounds like most software these days, rushed out the door to make money, and let the customer who spends good $$ be the beta testers. It is easy to find a bug when 35% of the users who own it start crying about it.

Having a healthy dose of "prudence" is a good thing. Being wary of trying a 3rd party firmware is wise. Flashing a beta version of firmware is, umm, wise? Expecting a manufacturer to fix your problems is, umm, wise? Wishful thinking, yes. Wise? Not so sure about that. Too many companies that built thier reputation on great customer support seem to forget this aspect when they become successful. It is a common occurence any more.

Given that Dlink themselves seemed to not be able to grasp what I was telling them told me the story in short order: either they don't know about, which means not many have complained, or they don't want to fix it. So, even at the risk of having to buy a new router, what option is there? Using a beta firmware or a patched one that is reported by many to work? Umm, gee whiz, I think I will take the option that other nerds like myself have used and be rid of the problems once and for all. Or, maybe I should just trash my Dlink and buy a different brand....

Looking at the third party firmware, the relevance for hackers to sabotage a video BIOS is virtually non-existent. A router, on the other hand is quit an interesting object. A hacked router firmware offers unlimited possibilities for phishing, spamming, zombieing etc. Just athought ofcourse.

Follow the directions that have been posted in other people threads and you should have success.

I for one have posted numerous times what to do and everytime the person has succeeded in the upgrade.
