I lost Volume_1 after having the drive up and running for a couple of months.  Decided to just format the drives again because there was nothing obvious in the admin screen and I had copies of the data on the drive.  Now format will not go above 94%.

Not sure what version of firmware you have isntalled; pre-1.03 versions used to stay at 94% long time.  If you're running a pre-1.03 version, either leave the unit alone for a half/full day or upgrade the firmware to the recently released.

I bought the drive because it was RAID 5 capable.  There was no reason for volume_1 to just start not mounting.  All four 1TB drives show good in the admin console.  I should not have lost the volume in the first place.  Oh, wait I said that already.  If I had been depending on this drive to keep important data, which was the eventual plan, I would have lost everything as it stands right now.  I have the DNS-323 and it has been stable ever since I bought it.  Actually bought both drives within a couple of week of each other.  I will have to check the firmware but I am pretty sure it is the latest build.  What is the issue with the drive hanging at 94%?

AFAIK, although firmware 1.02a added support for 1TB+ HDD's the problem still occurred.  D-Link Engineering will better explain the "stall" at 94% during format; it's been a long standing issue on the DNS-343 (and DNS-323) with 1TB+ HDD's. 

As for the loss of Volume_1, it's happened to me as well.  Take a moment to verify the HDD manufacturer website to confirm that your HDD's are at their latest firmware level.  For example; several months back, Seagate released firmware updates to some of their Barracuda 1TB+ HDD's to address some critical issues ... updated the HDD firmware and all has been good.

I took your advice and pulled one drive to check with Seagate and see if the firmware needed to be upgraded.  It did not so I did not bother with the rest.  All purchased at same time and I had checked firmware when I received them.  If one is good the others should be.  I was running 1.02a firmware so I downloaded 1.03 and installed.  It was able to format the drives again and I am now copying data to the drives.  I will have to see how long it lasts.  I want this enclosure to be the one that keeps a copy of all my data.  The reason I purchased it was because I could set it up with RAID 5 and ext3 file system so that if one drive took a crap (which they always do after about a year of continuous use) I could just purchase another one, replace it and be good to go.  Let's hope that DLINK has got it together on this firmware update and the drive does not loose the volume_1 again.  If I can't depend on it then I will have to replace it.  I have to much in the 4 1TB drives to not have this enclosure be reliable.

I hear ya ... purchased my two DNS-343's along with ten (10) 1TB Seagate HDD's when it first appeared on the market - have them set to RAID5 (EXT3).

My list of unit related isssues is relatively small; and two of the issues are HDD manufacturer related:

• firmware update to the HDD's to address lockup and "dropping" members
• broken SATA connector on one of the new HDD's; member kept "dropping"
• loss of Volume_1 on one unit duiring f/w 1.01; no warning.  Upgraded the f/w 1.02; been fine since
• loss of Volume_1 on the other unit post firmware 1.03 update; email alert indicated successful update of system and OLED firmware.

IMHO, the weakest aspects of the unit are:

• Logging; hopefully the new additions in f/w 1.03 will provide better advanced warning.
• High Temp; the units run hot during heavy I/O.  Since I positioned the units so that the front hangs 1/2" over the shelf - so as to allow additional airflow to be drawn in front the bottom face vent - they've been running cooler.
