Asymmetric read/write causing problems
« on: October 12, 2009, 07:03:39 PM »

I have 2 1.5T Seagate drives setup in RAID 1 w/ firmware 1.06.  My read speeds have been steadily decreasing over time - I believe in pace with filling up the drives.  I now seem to get <2Mbps (that's Mb, not MB) read, but my write speeds don't seem to be limited by the DNS (just hit 50Mb wired and 15Mb wireless).  I'm trying to stream video to my PS3, so I'm using large (0.5-4GB) files, but get the same when copying mp3s.  I see the same speeds copying files to/from computers (have tried 3).  I used to be able to stream 720p video, so I never saw the need to test raw speeds at the beginning.

Oh, and I've used multiple cables and multiple ports on the router. :)

I had thought it might have something to do with fragmentation, but I've tried some stuff that I know I put on the disk early that shouldn't have moved around, with the same results.  Don't have any clue how to defragment this - saw someone suggest copying over to another drive, but I don't have a spare 1.5T lying around, nor the 3 weeks that 1Mbps would take (I know someone is going to be tempted, but don't check the math - I made up the 3 weeks).  Don't expect that's the problem though.

In case it matters I also seem to not be able to see all files (but most) on the PS3 as on the computer.  Resetting the PS3 and the DNS doesn't change this.  If I rename the files I can see them.

Thanks for any help.

When you refresh the UPnP AV media server does it complete successfully? What does the status page of the DNS-323 say about your sync status? is it completed?

Yes, it takes a few minutes, but gets there.  The status says it is 'completed'.  Some updates I made yesterday are visible to the PS3 (everything is visible on the computer), but some changes still aren't there.

As an additional note, the files don't show up completely in alphabetical order on the PS3 when I list items from all folders (even those from the same folder).  They are by the first letter (D* is with D*), but after that it's hit or miss.  When looking at specific folders it looks good.

You stated "If I rename the files I can see them." can you provide an example of a file name you had to rename to see?

Nothing strange in my names, just alphanumerics and underscores.  I would rename something like GigliDirectorsCut_Disc1 to GigleDirectorsCut_Disc1SEE.  Names are purely made up for this example of course....

However, this part seems to possibly be better now, although I haven't verified it's 100% yet.  I reset to defaults, reconfigured, again refreshed upnp, and waited a couple of hours, and some of the files I knew to be missing are back.  Also, speeds are better, but still not fully right.  Computer read speeds are now what I'd expect (~50Mb+ on wired 100Mb network and ~15Mb on wireless g), but PS3 speeds are still horrible.  Slightly better than before at 2-3Mb vs 1-2Mb, but unusable.  Have tried wired and wireless on 2 ps3's (original and a slim).  Speeds are similar whether I'm trying to stream files or just copy.
