Problem mapping netowrk drive
« on: October 12, 2009, 07:08:50 PM »

Hello all,
I have been searching all over the net for a solution and cannot find a exact answer to my problem, I just replaced a Linksys WRT54G router with a D-Link DIR-655 router. Before I switch routers I was able to see all the computers that were connected to my network. I also had a network drive mapped to my Windows Vista Ultimate 64-Bit PC. The computer that I was sharing the Drive off of has Windows Xp Pro. Everything was working 100%. I switched out the routers to the new D-Link DIR-655 router and configured the router for my internet connection (PPoE). Once I had the router configured I powered up all my computers and did these steps:
1) ipconfig /flushdns
2) ipconfig /release
3) ipconfig /renew

All my computers connect to the internet just fine, 2 of them are wireless (Total of 4 PCs on my network)
Other components hooked up to network - Nintendo Wii (Wireless) / Sony PS3 (Wired) / Xbox 360 (Wired)
Everything connects fine with no problems

When I go to map network drive, it brings up the list of PCs, I select the computer with the drive I want to map to. I then get an error saying it cannot reach the host. I then open up command prompt and try pinging the computers. There is only 1 PC that I can ping and that is a PC downstairs connected wireless. I cannot ping my other wireless PC or my wired PC (The one i'm trying to map a drive from). I logged into the router and tried pinging the computers from the router and I get the same result.

Has anyone else had this problem and if so is there a way to resolve this problem. I currently have my Linksys router hooked back up and everything is working like it did before. Sorry if I gave too much information but I wanted to make sure I covered everything. I will be gone for a couple days for work so I will try any suggestions when I get home. Thanks again for every ones time in looking into this for me.

Router Info:
Hardware Version - A4
Firmware Version 1.32NA

Hi,

Did your router come with the 1.32 firmware ?

What LAN Ip scheme are you running ?  The Linksys may have used a different IP set....

As Sammydad1 suggested, the Linksys does have a different IP set (192.168.1.1 as opposed to D-Link's 192.168.0.1).

Either some/most of your PCs are using static IPs, or DNS/WINS cache, etc. is confused by the change.  I'd power down all the wireless clients to simplify things.  Power down both wired PCs, then power them up one at a time.  Check PCs IP with ipconfig and make sure Subnet Mask'd part of each IP Address all match up with routers "SETUP", "NETWORK SETTINGS" page.

Powering everything down and bringing it back up again will likely solve your problem unless you're using static IP addresses, added IP entries to Windows lmhosts file, added IP addresses to Windows "Advanced TCP/IP Settings", etc.

Another thing that can cause this is having more than one DHCP server on the network.  If you left the LAN side of the Linksys connected and didn't turn off it's DHCP server it might cause the problem you're having.  Could also be your ISP's DHCP messages are getting through the router somehow.

Thanks all for your reply, I know that the IP schemes are different between the Linksys and D-Link routers. I just reset the D-Link back to default and applied all my settings so I could connect to the internet. I changed to IP scheme to 192.168.1.1 on the D-Link so it was the same as the Linksys. I don't have the Linksys connected to the network at the same time as the D-Link. I just tried getting the drive to map and still cannot get it to work. I also am still not able to ping the other wired PC. I did power everything down and power it all back up and it is still not working. The Subnet Masks are all match up with the router. I'm not an expert at networking but I do know how to do the basic stuff. I will just continue using the Linksys until I can get this to work. Again any help is great. Thanks
