DNS-321 with a Squeezebox Boom?
« on: October 16, 2009, 06:47:00 AM »

I just purchased a DNS-321 and have moved my music library to it. Now I would like to use a Slimdevices Squeezebox Boom to stream music off of it directly without having my computer turned on. Can this be done or must I have the slimcenter software running on a PC? I like the Squeezebox and the DNS-321 a lot, but I don't know how to stream directly off the NAS. Can the squeezebox be configued to look for upnp or the DNS-321 configued to run the slimcenter software? Has anyone tried this with any success?

I believe squeezebox uses their own method of streaming. Unless an Add-On is developed to support this you will need to run the application on your PC.

So?  How did the experiment work?  DOES the DNS-321 work with Squeezebox?

I see that there is a fun_plug for the DNS-321/3 done by the same guy that did one for Firefly, and am going to give it a try as soon as I can get a squeezebox to experiment with.   Have a look at http://www.inreto.de/dns323/squeezecenter-funplug/

Error in my previous posting - this is not done by the same guy who packaged up the firefly fun_plug all nice and neat and easy.  His site is http://files.hesse-n.com/ch3snas/.

I have successfully installed squeezecenter on my DNS-321 using the funplug. Everything works on my boom - but just barely. I have to wait anywhere from 3 seconds to infinity for a response after pressing any button, even volume adjustments. MP3s get stuck a few seconds into the song and then resume and play well until the end. There is a noticeable delay between songs/tracks that I don't have when running squeezecenter from a computer. This is too slow for any enjoyable use therefore I will look into either a new NAS or adding a sheevaplug.

I just installed the squeezecenter on my DNS-321 using the funplug (http://www.inreto.de/dns323/squeezecenter-funplug/) and it works great!

Still hoping to figure it out so i can get squeezecenter to the latest version, install some plugins, etc. but otherwise no complaints right now.  Web interface is not the fastest - but I am driving all activity from the remote.  ~ 50,000 songs.  good stuff.  Thanks for this post - I could find -zero- information until I stumbled here.
