Synology DS107 server not seen
« on: October 17, 2009, 05:42:01 AM »

I have just added a Synology DS107 server to my system and nothing can see it when connected through the wireless side of the DIR-655. The Server is connected to an ethernet port on the 655. By nothing seeing it I mean the computers, Synology's set-up assistant, and FireFox 3.5.3 or Safari 4.0.3 browsers. If I hard-wire (ethernet) connect a computer to the 655 the server is seen so the problem appears to be getting to the server from the wireless side of the 655. What do I do?

problem system: several intel MACs all running OS 10.5.8, DIR-655 (firmware 1.11), HP c7260 all in one (wirelessly connected), DHL internet router connected via Telmex. All of this has worked flawlessly for the past 18 months.

As part 2, what firmware would people recommend. From the chatter I've read it looks like I should stop at 1.21 and leave 1.3x alone for now.

Check if you have WLAN Partition enabled here http://support.dlink.com/Emulators/dir655/132NA/Advanced_Wireless.html

I just tried it both ways with the same results. I was assuming all I was suppose to do was check the WLAN partition box. I did a router restart after changing the settings. It, WLAN, is now back off.

That setting will isolated your wired and wireless computers so it should be disabled.

Do you have any other computer on the wired network? If so you should try pinging them or better if it runs windows, access its shares from the wireless network?

All the computers are Macs and all connect to the network wirelessly via the D-Link 655. The WLAN feature has  been disabled all the time except when except when I turned it on to test it. It is off again now. I have connected one computer to the ethernet side of the 655 to test if the computer sees the Synology server (it does but that is no surprise, the switch part of the router works). Since all the computers "see" the printer (wirelessly connected) and connect to the internet through the wireless side of the router, it seems that the problem must be that the router does not "see" the server. I suppose that the wireless side of the 655 does not "see" the switch side (the DHL router goes into a specifically designated port that is not part of the switch proper) but that seems unlikely.

What I'm trying to do now is give the server a static IP address then give it a DHS reservation in the 655 router. Everything else has required a DHS reservation to be allowed access to the router but they are all on the wireless side. The server does not like the numbers I have been using to assign it a static IP address and I am working with Synology to get that done.

I have another similar system at, a different location, but with an older Synology server and an Apple Airport and this sort of thing has never been a problem on it. Everything I have ever attached on the switch side (separate Asante switch) has always been seen without me having to do anything. That is why I'm a little surprised about what is happening here.

Thanks for taking the time to help bigeyes0x0.

you have to enable the feature apple talk in:
management--->File sharing--->windows/mac os in the synology diskstation manager.

Is firewall setting enabled ? And if yes did you enable: If no rules match : Allow Access

Yes I have the latest firmware installed on the server. No I do not have the firewall active but I did check the box as you suggested. It still behaves the same. Nothing can access the DS107 from the wireless side of the DIR-655 and everything can from the switch side.
