Can't play media files after copying them to DNS-321 share
« on: October 23, 2009, 07:05:54 AM »

I can't play any media files (mp3s, movies) off of a dns-321 mapped drive.  When I try to open an mp3 in Windows Media Player, for example, it says "Windows Media Player cannot find the specified file."  I can however open JPEGs.  But, if I copy the files off the drive and onto my local hard drive, they play fine.  So it doesn't seem like the files are corrupt.

I have it set up with two separate 1 TB drives, and they're formated with EXT3.  I also have the 1.03 firware.

Any help would be appreciated.

Do you have another PC on your network to try to open the file from? Reboot the PC and the DNS-321 and see if the issue continues.

I tried opening a media file from another computer, and it played fine in Windows Media Player.  Then I tried playing a media file using a different media player on my computer, and it played fine.  So it seems like only Media Player on my computer.  However, I can media files through Media Player on my computer from a different network share, just not from a DNS-321 share.  I'm using Windows Media Player 9.  any idea why WMP9 would have trouble playing media from the DNS-321 on my computer?

Oh yeah, and I have rebooted both the DNS-321 and my computer.

Are you using WMP9 on the other computer as well?

Sorry, yes.  And both are on wired, gigabit ethernet connections

Hmm seems like theres an issue with WMP9 on that computer. Are you running Windows 98, ME, or 2000? Do you have all the latest updates?

Yeah, it definitely seems like a WMP problem.  However, it does only happen with the DNS-321 shares, like I said.  I can play files on shares from another windows PC.  I also just updated to WMP11 and it has the same issue.  I'm on Windows XP SP3, and just recently ran windows update.

One other discovery I made is that if I go to the full UNC path of where the media file is located, and double-click it, then it plays fine in WMP.  So it's like it can't find the file when it's on a mapped drive.

I also just reformatted my DNS-321 and am now using two drives in Raid 0, formatted with EXT2.  Just wanted to see if that made a difference, and it didn't.
