Help setting my DGL 4500 to limit a computers bandwidth..
« on: November 23, 2009, 06:02:39 PM »

I can't figure out for the life of me how to do this, but I need it done as my wife is eating up 99.99999% of the bandwidth watching TV online.  My wifes computer, my computer and my 360 and all networked through my DGL 4500 gaming router but as soon as she turns on her TV programs via a program called ppstream my internet gets dragged down to worse then dial up.

Could someone please help me with step by step instructions on how to do this or point me in the right direction where I can find directions on how to set this up?  I have been searching around online for the past two months, this is kind of my last option here.  Any help here is greatly appreciated and thanks in advance!

Have you tested your connection speeds?  Be sure to do it while nobody is connected to it.

My ISP is RoadRunner (Brighthouse Networks) in Clearwater, FL.  I use this site to test my speeds.

http://speedtest.tampabay.rr.com/ or http://speedtest.net/

Have you had RR check your modem?  I had a problem with mine due to a line amplifier in my attic that was installed by a technician.  It amplified the signal too much and it was causing some disconnects.

If you google your cable modem, you should be able to find how to log into it.  Mine is a scientic atlanta and I connect to it by going to 192.168.100.1

My connection speed is not the problem, none of the info about testing my modem and such is reliant to what I am asking I appreciate you trying to help but it really doesn't help in what I am asking here.

My internet is fine, my modem is fine, my router is fine, internet is very fast and downloading or gaming is seamless until she uses the program to stream tv shows then it is a disaster.  I frequently download at around 3000-4200 per second and am usually connected at around 30-40mb download.

I have bumped into hundreds of threads online with people complaining about this program my wife is using and everyone seems to be having the exact same problem, the program eats up nearly all of the bandwidth when it is used.  The suggestion to resolve the problem seems to be to use your router to limit the other computers bandwidth as the software is designed to grab as much of the available bandwidth which is why I came here to prevent this.

All I need to know is how I can limit her computes bandwidth via my router to prevent these problems in the future.  I know it can be done, I have seen posts where people have stated they have done this with the DGL 4500 and I just can't find information on how exactly to go about doing it.  I really just need to know how to set her computer to only gain access to say 300k and no more.  I am really tired of playing Modern Warfare 2 like it was a slide show or waiting 45 minutes to load up yahoo.com while she is watching her shows.

If someone could please lend me a hand here I would really REALLY appreciate it!!!!

The only thing I can think of is to create two GameFuel rules. One rule would put her traffic at 255 priority (lowest). The second would put your traffic at 0 priority (highest).

This is not really what you are looking for, but I simply don't see anything you can do with this router to directly limit her bandwith.

ppstream makes your computer part of their network. So while she's downloading video from other people, she's also sending it out as well. This is just like how BitTorrent works. However, people manage BitTorrent data rates through their software, not their router. If the software doesn't let you set limits, I think you are out of luck here.

Other than what squirrel2 suggested i can't think of anything else to do with this router.  If you have an old PC you might try the astaro security gateway software or smoothwall.  Also, I believe the dd-wrt software that can be loaded on some routers allows you to mess with QOS.

BTW, what is the name of the software.  Wanna make sure my wife or kids don't install it.  ;D

The software is called PPStream, she was born in another country and is able to watch TV from her home country.  It is great for her so I don't want to tell her not to use it but it makes everything I enjoy impossible to use while it is running.  Thanks for the suggestions, I will try messing with the gamer fuel options I guess.

Have you even tried looking at the software to see if it lets you limit its upload bandwidth?

Yeah that was the first thing I did, there are a few problems though lol.  First off she has a version in another language, I can't read it and she is not computer literate nor able to translate some more technical words.  I downloaded the so called English version and every bit of the text looks like this ????? .  So trying to figure out what each option means is a huge pain in the rear as she has to try and translate each word.  I did find the spot that I believe had something to do with bandwidth and I tried to set it to a few hundred k but it changed nothing.  My guess is it had to do with upload speeds but I am not 100% positive of it.  I did web searches for help on the subject and came up with several posts by people saying the software just can't be changed and does what it wants which means eating up all the bandwidth.

I did have a bit of success with my PC by using the gamer fuel option that was suggested above.  I ended up giving her a static IP address and putting her priority to the lowest possible.  I then made my PC static as well and took a range of IP's that my 360 seemed to be jumping between and made those all priority 7.  So far my PC works perfect, a bit slower then normal but I can watch you tube videos and play games online decently.  My 360 is a bit better but still gets laggy at times which can be frustrating but at least the games are not slide shows anymore.

The funny thing is her program still eats up as much bandwidth as it can get so she never has a problem with it streaming videos flawlessly.  It is usable for now and until I can come up with a better solution it will have to do.  Thanks again for all the help.

To fix the ??? showing in Windows XP:

Go to the Control Panel. Open up Regional and Language Options. Click the Languages tab. Turn on Install files for East Asian Languages. Click Apply (it will eventually ask for the XP CD). Reboot.

You should see the proper characters, and perhaps your wife can read and translate them to you. Good luck!
