Have 3 Win7 machines and 1 Win XP machine using the same DNS-323 as file server. All machines are using MS Office 2007. When one of the machines open a file and saves the changes once the file is closed the next time the file is opened by any of the machines (except XP) a window pops up with the following message: File is being used by another user. The options available: 1. Open as Read Only, 2. Notify (when file is available for read/write access) or 3. Cancel. I have verified multiple times already that none of the files were used by anyone else. Once the file is reopened by any of the Win7 machines and option 'Notify' is clicked, a few seconds later a new window pops up notifying that the file can now be opened with read/write access. This happens over and over again. I haven't noticed it with .pdf or .jpg files or with any other extensions yet.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

What version firmware are you running?

There was a problem with SMB access of Microsoft Office files with that firmware.  This may be part of your issue, hard to say.

Check the beta section here, that error was fixed in the latest beta.

Build 08

1. Re-adding NFS server support through AddOns.

Since I am not a pro inthis topic I must ask the question: will this affect the data stored on the DNS at all? I have lots of important files on the NAS and don't want to risk loosing anything.

If you have "important files" on the NAS, you should for SURE have a backup.  If not, that's the first order of business!

FWIW, I've upgraded the firmware a number of times without affecting the data on the disk, but that doesn't mean it'll never happen.

Upgraded firmware to 1.08b08, but it seems issue is still there. Opened a few Office files, closed them. Tried to reopen them again and got the same window as before: file is used by 'another user', options to choose from: open read only, notify, cancel.

Any other ideas?

Works fine here.  I opened four Word files using Word 2007 from the DNS-323.  I then closed them all, then opened them again, no issues at all.

When I tried it, I had all files on the DNS. Didn't remove files. Obviously it still doesn't work, so not sure what I am doing different.

I'm not sure what you meant about "remove files".  I have backups on the DNS-323, I just went there and did the experiment on Word and Excel files.

What I meant to say is that I did have all files on the DNS when I upgraded the software and didn't remove them.

I did nothing but upgrade the firmware to the latest beta to solve the problem, the files were there from when the problem was occurring.

It is interesting. I guess I ran into a wall again. I did the same thing but it doesn't seem to be resolving the issue on my DNS.

Did you do a factory reset after upgrading the firmware?

I have an issue with file access as well. I have some MS Word file in a directory, and I changed the ownership for these files in the web interface of the DNS from "all users" to a specific user. From then on, I could not open the files any more, even if I change the ownership back to "all users". The error message I get on the Windows 7 machines is this: "you require permission from unix user\nobody to access this file."

I googled the message and I get that this is a file permission problem in Unix/windows. THe recommendation is to go in with telnet and change the file permissions with the chown command. However, I suddenly get \ another problem, which may be unrelated.  When I try to login to the DNS323 via putty, I could do this as root, with my usual password. After rebooting the DNS, it does not allow me access any more with that same root user password. What is going on?
