I want to create several users and set permissions.  First I create the users, go to Network Access and select the user, but I cannot get a folder selected.  "Browse" pops up a window showing Volume_1 and folders for each of the users, but clicking on them does nothing, and typing in shows each keystroke only for a brief flash.  The result is no folders get selected.

In the text on Network Access it says, "Before specific user or group rules can be created, the default rules must be deleted."  I presume the default rules are shown on the line at the bottom of the page, "SMB ACCESS LIST:" which shows Volume_1 and ALL.  If I delete that entry I still cannot select a folder, i.e. "Browse" and key entry don't do anything.

The setup is a new DNS-321, two Seagate 1T drives, formatted and setup for RAID1.  After formatting the drives I upgraded the firmware to 1.03.  The unit appears to work, i.e. I can see Volume_1, as well as the user folders from Windows Vista, Linux Suse 10.3, and Ubuntu 9.10.  I copied a file from Vista onto the DNS-321, and that appears OK.  My conclusion is that the box works, so it isn't a networking or hardware problem.

I tried Tech Support on the phone, but after about 20 minutes of struggling to communicate the line went dead, so I figure this forum may be a better venue for finding a solution.

After upgrading the firmware, did you do a factory reset?  That may return sanity to the box.

Thanks for the response.  I had not tried the reset, so I did the reset.  I then added users, then tried to set permissions and could not set folders.  I then deleted the single, default entry (Volume_1) at the bottom of the page (SMB Access List), and tried to set folders (trying all combinations of things I could think of.  No joy.

I tried Vista|IE (v Suse 10.3|Firefox) to see if there was any difference.  One item I noticed is when I click "Browse" to select a folder and the popup windows appears, when I click on the "+" sign beside a user folder the bar for folder selected shows "Volume_1/deh" which is what one would expect, except that it self-erases in less than a 1/2 second.  Somehow it suggests that the DNS-321 program is making a some sort of validity check and finds something missing.

A workable solution discovered--

In the popup windows of Network Access, Folders Browse, when I click on the name the entry "sticks".  After clicking on OK it shows up in folders and it all appears to work.  In the popup window, if I click on the "+" the folder appears for a fraction of a second and disappears.  I still cannot type in anything.  In the popup window each character entered flashes for only a moment .  In the main window the keyboard has no effect even if has been selected in the popup window.  The keyboard entry appears to not function for selecting folders.

BTW, one of the earlier threads talked about a problem that sounded the same and turning Java off in Firefox was a solution.  That didn't work for me.  Using Suse 10.3|Firefox, I turned off Java nothing works with DNS-321 (and even after logging in).

Odd.  Have you tried IE, just to see if it's something about FF in your environment?  How about a different computer on the network?

Yes I tried three machines with Vista|IE, Unbuntu|Firefox, Suse 10.3|Firefox,Kongueror.  The behavior is the same with all of them. 

It looks like one is prevented from typing in a folder names; they have to be selected from a list.  What is confusing is that the cursor blinks at the beginning of the line just as it would when typing something in.

I am probably missing someting here but are you stating that you cannot type in the folder you desire, or you can't select it from a tree structure, or you are missing maybe the final directory you are trying to locate?

I cannot type in the path either, doesn't work and I think it's not meant as an entry point but rather a way to list the selection you made so I don't see it as a problem.  This is Linux and all names are case sensitive so this could be a feature.  Maybe the text box could be changed to a box you can't select but it works for me.

Anything I try to enter by typing in the text box will result in the box being empty.  Whenever I click on a "+" in the directory tree the text box fills temporarily and once in the subdirectory it's empty again.  I can only select folders from the list, never type in a name, then the full path is in the text box.  Then I select Ok.

So, can you select the folder you want or not?
