DIR-655 configuration for UMA
« on: December 21, 2009, 08:13:31 PM »

Thanks to lizzi555 for the following - http://forums.dlink.com/index.php?topic=9361.0 . Starting with these settings enabled me to then configure port forwarding and QoS rules which worked. Previously, any changes I had made resulted in loss of the UMA signal after router reboot. Bottom line; copying the settings on the link above resulted in a marked improvement in call quality. Then I tried a number of tweaks based on other posts in various fora and ended up with call quality that is close to what I used to have with my land line. I will probably do some additional adjusting, but here is what is working for someone with a DIR-655, BlackBerry Curve 8900, Rogers TalkSpot and Cogeco Internet Service Provider.

Log in to your router. Click on 'ADVANCED' near the top, then 'PORT FORWARDING' on the left-hand column. Under PORT FORWARDING RULES check the empty box on the left, under 'Name' type 'Curve', under IP Address type your phone's IP address. (To get the IP address, on the phone, go to Options', Status, and use the IP Address at the bottom. {Previously I had used the IP address for the phone found on the router's status page. For some reason this did not work, but once I had finished performing the entire configuration, then pulled the battery, the IP address on the phone became identical to the one on the router.})

Look up and to the right to 'PORTS TO OPEN'. Under TCP type 4101 . Under UDP type 500, 4101, 4500 . To the right, Schedule should say Always and Inbound Filter should say Allow All. Up and to the left click Save Settings. (If it then says 'Reboot Required', click on 'Reboot Later'.)

On the left-hand column click on QOS ENGINE. You want to see the following:

Enable Traffic Shaping:        Box checked
Automatic Uplink Speed:       Box unchecked
Measured Uplink Speed :       Not Estimated
Manual Uplink Speed:           1024 (If it doesn't, click on Select Transmission Rate to                                                                   to the right and select 1024 kbps.)
Connection Type:                 Auto-detect
Detected xDSL or Other         No
  Frame Relay Network:

Go down the page to QOS ENGINE SETUP

Enable QOS Engine:                Box checked
Automatic Classification:          Box unchecked
Dynamic Fragmentation:           Box unchecked

Go down the page to QOS ENGINE RULES

Place a check mark in the box on the left.

Under Name type Curve . Under Priority type 50 . Protocol should say 257 and to the right Both .
Under Local IP Range enter the IP value for the phone that you used previously. Use the same value in the box to the right of 'to'. To the right, Local Port Range will be 0 to 65535. Below that Remote Port Range will also say 0 to 65535. To the left, Remote IP Range will be 0.0.0.0 to 255.255.255.255 .

Go back up to the top and click on Save Settings.  (If it then says 'Reboot Required', click on 'Reboot Later'.)

Then go over to ADVANCED WIRELESS in the left-hand column. Click on it. You should see or change to:

Transmit Power               High
Beacon Period                 50
RTS Threshold                 2304
Fragmentation Threshold    2304
DTIM Interval                   1

If asked to Reboot, do so. Wait for the page to refresh. Then go to your BlackBerry, open the back cover, pull the battery, wait 3 seconds and replace it. Put the cover back on and watch the phone go to EDGE and then (I hope!) to UMA.

I hope you will be as impressed with the voice quality as I am.

Good luck and thanks again to lizzi555. (If you encounter any difficulties they will be because of limitations in my instructions, not his.)

Thanks for this post. Excellent detail.  I've used the settings and so far UMA seems to be working great!

Thanks again!!
