Can't connect to DIR-635 using my brand new DWA-556
« on: December 23, 2009, 03:55:59 AM »

Hello, first post here :-)

Just installed a DWA556 in a Dell C521 available PCI-E slot, Windows Vista Basic 32bit recognized it immediatelly, asked for drivers, I put the CD-ROM that came with the package into the drive, the drivers were copied and the adapter was installed successfully.

But when I click on "Connect to a network" from Windows Vista Network Management tab, it can't findy any networks to connect! And I have a notebook with a wirless connection (from where I'm writing this post) which connect perfectly from about the same range!

Any ideas?

Thanks and best regards from Brasil!

Well, I made some progress, moving the DIR-635 router to a closer position, now both Windows Vista WLAN Manager and the D-Link Network Manager see the wireless network (it looks like the thick walls in my house are hampering badly the signal), but I still can't connect, now it says something like "the actual network settings on this computer do not match the access point network settings". I've already reset the password on both ends but no luck.

Any suggestions?

FIXED - the problem was, in fact, the distance between the router and the system. I've reduced it to ~12 meters only and the signal is 2 bars (regular quality) in Windows Vista WLAN manager - DLink Wireless Manager reports a signal intensity of 65%, it looks like the thick walls are doing the trick here :(
(albeit I'm connected @ 300Mpbs :))

I was thinking in buying 3 new antennas with 9dBi each (http://www.digimer.com.br/handler.php?module=site&action=view#produto:2165 - brasilian site) to replace the 3 ones that came with the DIR-635, but I'm not sure if this will improve the signal quality. Can someone tell me if this will help?

Also I'm facing some intermittent disconnections w/o apparent reason, Windows Vista just lost connection then reconnects again in ~2/3minutes.... any ideas?

Thanks and regards,

The disconnection problem is gone with the new Atheros drivers, but the signal strenght is not yet. I'm still unsure of upgrading the antennas on the DIR-635 will do the trick.

Any advise?
