Title: What is the best format in hard drive NTFS, FAT32 or EXT3?
Post by: ra18ge on November 29, 2010, 09:08:31 AM
Hi,

What is the best format in hard drive NTFS, FAT32 or EXT3?

Need advice which one is best and fastest for my DNS-321.

Thanks.

The DNS-321 will only work with EXT2 or EXT3 filesystems, which are created by the NAS.

EXT2 is apparently slightly faster than EXT3, but EXT3 is more reliable as it has a journalling system.

yeah what's up with just ext2 or ext3 only?  linux supports many formats.... why were the rest excluded?

i'd prefer to have them formatted as hsf+

i hope if there ever will be a next firmware update - to include other formats

As this is network attached storage, accessed via SMB or FTP, what difference does it make what file system it's running?

macs can only run spotlight on hfs+ drives

I don't know much about macs, nor spotlight, but I don't think it works with network attached storage at all.
Whatever device or software you use to access the files on the NAS will be using the SMB or FTP protocols. To that end, it makes no difference what file system is running other than for data integrity or performance.

You really should have a better understanding of these things before stating ill informed information

i wasn't talking about performance or data integrity - i am referring to running spotlight on a drive - and yes - mac does spotlight hfs+ formatted drives whether it's usb or nas
