I know we all start at the beginning and work forwards - I am at the beginning. Bit of a shame allowing for the fact that almost 30 years ago I trained as a computer operator but am totally out of my depth here.
Just bought one of these units, installed it all and have the drives formatted in RAID1 with two 1tb WD greens, they are as happy as larry sitting in the case and are recognised and on the network in my computer. I am trying to schedule backups of my photos and documents and after half an hour have sort of got it sorted out in "Applications - local backup". Have got the schedules in and the backup starts and errors with a file size error.
Guys I know its so noob its not funny, I just dont know what I am doing here. Should have paid more attention to technology but sticking pc's together for mates and installing operating systems isnt anyway near this sorta stuff.
Can someone please see their way clear to helping me out? This seems like a damn good device, paid $145 AU for it and want to learn how to set it up.

Can you give some more details
Read this , is it the same problem ?

Sort of - I can get to the point where I can get the backup scheduled ok, but when it starts I get a red X in status which means its failed.
As I said - totally know nothing here, have managed to bumble my way this far but need help.

Can you post a screen shot of your settings or put them here in list form box by box?
-
Here - I have tried using paint, best I can do. Screenied one of the backups and the other is the same but different folder.

I cant see how to load a picture file other than imageshack, if there is an easy way please tell me!! The screen shot is on my desktop.

One thing that stands out is that you have File selected in the drop down but you are trying to copy a Folder. You need to make sure that you have the Folder drop down selected. Also which OS are you using on your pc that you want to backup your photos and documents? Win7 is VERY finnicky when it comes to sharing things and being able to read/write from that source over the network. I posted this on another board regarding the same issue.
What OS are is your share on? On Win7 I also attempted to share a folder on the desktop and originally came up with an issue of a 'fail' message when trying to use the test function. I also had another shared folder test on my main C: drive that was successful so I compared the two and noticed that when sharing on a desktop it did not add the windows "Administrators" group to the advanced permissions on the folder. When this was not present the device was giving a failed message on tests however after going into the sharing permissions (Right Click folder, Properties , Sharing, Advanced Sharing, Permissions.) My tests are on a public share for "everyone" to make sure it is open so it listed Everyone and Administrators as the account.
Not sure if that is where you are stuck as well but I did just successfully share a folder on the desktop with a success message from the NAS under Local backup option.

Windows 7 64 bit, may be part of the problem I agree. Amended the settings and still the same issue, are you able to provide a link to the other board please? And thanks for the help here, really really appreciated.

Ok I think I am onto something (not sure). I have the DNS 320 hooked up via ethernet to a Thomson router via DHCP, I have checked in there and the IP address is 10.0.0.6, no IP address I can ascertain. Or am I not finding the correct details?
-
Also checking using ipconfig I have no IP4 IP, just the 10.x.x.x ?
-
May have sorted this out. Managed to go through my router settings and round its 192.x.x.x address, amended the settings in the backup and have set it up to go tonight. Will see how it goes, this stuff is not easy to learn but by the end of it I should have the hang of it - I hope!
-
Backup failed. Is there a way to check some log to find why? I thought I had it set up correctly.
Help please - so out of my depth here and needing help!
-
Here is a screenie showing my settings. Wont work and I have set permissions on the folder I want to back up for everyone on the network to share.

Can you show me a screenshot of your folders permissions? I just tried it here at home and was able to get the nas to begin backing up my documents. Mind you it took me a couple of tries because I had other shares interfering with the share somehow but it is now backing up correctly. Make sure when you are sharing the folder that you add the "Everyone" user if you are going to use anonymous connection otherwise you will need to create a specific user in windows with permission and input that in the nas.
-
Ill do that - reasonably sure I did share "everyone" but will check.
-
Ok - here it is.

Guys - still urgently needing help here.
-
That image doesn't show the permissions just the share name. Click on Advanced Sharing button. You should have "Share this folder" checked. Then Click permissions and take a screenshot of that popup.
-
Sent you a pm.
-
And here is the image as requested.

help?????
-
I feel like I am being a nag here but I really do need some assistance here - bought the 320 due to its good reviews and need someone who knows how to drive it to explain its setup to me if possible.
Other thing - when I know enough, I am more than happy to assist others.
-
Try going back into that permissions window and adding the "Administrators" accounts. I know mine didn't start working anonymously until I added that.
-
Apologies for the delay but I have been so flat out its not funny, havent had time to get to the pc for days.
I had a look for adminstrator and couldnt find it. /dumb??
-
GUYS????????
I am sitting here with this NAS being setup correctly. Help - please?
-
In the pic in #12 you show it being setup as anonymous, is there any reason for that? You also talk about IP of 10.x.x.x while the router is 192.x.x.x - I can see possible problems in both of these. Either the network should all in the 10.x.x.x range or the 192.x.x.x NOT both or you will have problems communicating especially if the computer is in the 193.x.x.x and the NAS is 10.x.x.x - I would go as far as saying they will not work together unless you have a bridge setup somewhere.
You might also find it advantageous to give the NAS a fixed IP (192.168.0.32 is the default) and make sure you use the name of the computer if it is assigned an IP by DHCP.
In the setup I have here the server has a fixed IP as does the NAS - that way all the other computers can have those destinations 'hard wired' and we've never had any problems, likewise we don't have windows but people arriving with windows notebooks are able to connect to our server and the NAS without problems and upload and download as necessary.
-
This is lame. I'm having the same exact problem.
Is everyone having success with this other than a few like myself?
-
Had same issue as you. Its not a windows 7 64 bit issue.
I found my issue was with folder permissions in Windows 7.
You may think you have them shared but you need to do something else. I'm at work, but will post a shot of what I mean when I get home. but you have to access the main sub folder you want to back up and remove sharing options in advanced and add sharing to all users and accounts.

Great...I'll be awaiting your response. I'm beyond frustrated at this point...

Screen shot above is what you need to look for from the advanced sharing options per folder you want to back up. From here you need to click on add , and select everyone. Try that.

Here's what I have. I'm trying the simplest case....sharing C: drive.
Properties:
Advanced Sharing:
Permissions:
But when I'm on the NAS, this is what I get... Fail for the following:
-
On your first screen it shows the shared options greyed out. This is what you need to access to enable sharing to all users. This is enable the NAS box to access the folder.
-
Okay....maybe sharing C: isn't the most secure thing. I was under the impression that in order view anything on C:, you'd have to "Share" C: as a whole, but maybe the setting is just viewing root.
I'm still not having luck....so I'm going to use a similar example a user used earlier in the post (instead of sharing C:)...
I created "BackupFolder" on C:, Share it, resolves to \\ASUS-PC\BackupFolder
(http://img43.imageshack.us/img43/6928/propertiesb.jpg)
** I struck out my username **
(http://img51.imageshack.us/img51/2631/filesharei.jpg)
But I get FAIL:
-
Help anyone?
-
whats the full address of that folder your trying to back up? ie c:\xxxxx\cxxxx\xxxxx
-
It's C:\BackupFolder
-
Can I poke an idea where.
Try renaming Asus-PC to AsusPC , remove the -
Some systems/Os's don't like symbols like '-' in file or folder names.
-
Damn...I was really hoping that was it. But I just tried it...same result: FAIL.
Any other suggestions.....anyone? Moderators?!

Do I have to tweak anything in my "Advanced Sharing Settings" ?
(if you right-click on the Network icon, then the "Change advanced sharing settings" on the left side list)
Under "Home or Work (current profile)", I have:
Network discover: Turn on...
File and printer sharing: Turn on...
Public folder sharing: Turn on sharing so anyone...
Media streaming: Allowed
File sharing connections: Use 128-bit encryption...
Password protected sharing: Turn off...
HomeGroup connections: Allow Windows to manage...
Also....is everyone part of a HomeGroup?
And is my Workgroup setting of "WORKGROUP" fine?
I'm just throwing a bunch of settings out there for suggestions on changing....if you can help, please do!
-
I'll absolutely pledge to this. Can't wait to see your work finished. :)

Those settings are the same as mine. I do have homegroup set up. This is how I transfer files to and from other window 7 PC's on the network..
Simple question, can you actually transfer files to and from your NAS box using explorer? Also can you stream media from the NAS box to a xbox or PS3 (if you have a similar UPNP device)
Is your NAS box connected to a router too? Might be worth connecting the NAS box directly by cable to the computer and trying - I wonder if its the router blocking the connection!

Yes, the NAS is fine under Explorer. I've copied files to and from the NAS via Explorer. And I'm able to stream via the PS3 and iTunes recognizes the NAS as a Shared device.
It's just the LAN Backups I'm having issues with :-[
-
Lets 100% eliminate the router as a problem, connect the NAS box directly to the computer LAN port and try. I am sure it won't work but try it
-
I had actually thrown my hands in the air with this - purely frustrated. Good to see that it is still being worked on.
I gave up and used the Total Recovery Pro software that came bundled with the box had to get some backup working.
Would LOVE to have this resolved so I can use all the attributes of the 323, only reason I went from manual backups with a dual bay Vantec was D-Links reputation.
I will have a work through the above and report back.
-
For the past two weeks my back up stopped working. Got a little fed up again trying to resolve this.
Just had another bash at it and found Windows have activated password sharing in the advanced sharing settings in control panel. Turned it off and back up working again :-)

So you have your NAS setup correctly yeah? Possible to give me a hand here? Terribly frustrated at this point, almost regretting purchasing this now as it has been months and undereducated me cant get this up and running.
Anyone setup all of the attributes yet in win 7 professional 64 bit and have it running smoothly?

I am running Windows 7 Ultimate 64 and I got it working. It took alot of playing around with different settings, sharing options and account set up.
What account are you signing into on your PC. I see from previous pages you were not signed in as admin.
