My unit seems to be intermittent on if i can see new files when they are added. Going in and forcing a refresh seems to fix it.
I noticed on the ITunes tab there is an auto refresh setting but do not see the same thing for UpnP. Is there a trick to automate this? Could not find it in the manual.

Hi,
I am running the latest 2.02 firmware. I read somewhere in the GUI information boarder on the right side of the screen that UPNP should automatically update itself once set up. I have not noticed a problem but I have not been checking to see it this happens immediately or not, but it definitely happens by the next day. I did notice a while back, when first adding a large amount of data, it did not automatically refresh and I did the manual "refresh". The other thing I noticed with this units after updating the firmware is that I have had to go in and re-enable and re-save various settings to get them working again even if they show as being enabled. The other possible thing is that sometimes it seems that a total power down and restart seems to be necessary to get things working again. I don't know if any of these suggestions will help, but good luck.

I have the same problem. I use the DNS320 as a media server primarily and the media library does not automatically update any more since any update after version 2.0. I have to manually refresh the library which takes a long time.
-
Hi,
I have done some experimenting. I transfered a new media folder on to the 320 which was >12GB and the media server did not pick it up in over 24 hours so I did a manual refresh. I later transfered just a few files over to an already existing folder and these showed up in the media server almost immediately. That is why I guess I did not notice that it was not working properly after initially moving most of my media over. I don't know if the problem has something to do with the amount of new data or the new folder, but I think it is the larger amount of data that seems to cause the problems.
Another little problem I have noticed with the media server function is that one of my media players, Argosy brand, I get an "invalid file type" when accessing through the media server, but they play fine if I access them through the network shares and also play fine through another brand of NAS media server. Some of the "invalid" files are new, but some are quite a bit older and now are coming up as "invalid" and I am pretty certain they all played before this last firmware upgrade. Perhaps the alphanumeric problem was not the only glitch with the media server.
-
I cant speak from 2.0 to 2.02 firmware but i am seeing similar problems using Sony media players (BD570 and a stand alone unit SMP-100). Certain file types play fine when accessed through a network share via WMP serving them from the NAS (via a PC) but if I try to have then served through the Sharecenter media player UPnP I get invalid file type. Due to not liking the WMP file structures nor do i want to have my PC on to stream media (main reason for NAS purchase) I really dont want to switch to that method.
Does anyone have a list of maybe file type limitations for our NAS units so i can convert my media if necessary? Is this a bug that Dlink is working on? I assumed if WMP could serve it any DLNA or UPnP service could do the same (without a transcode).
If we can get more specifics on the file types that are troublesome, does this need to go on the firmware issues list?

Hi again,
I've recently, since 2.02, noticed some avi's and a couple mp4's have come up as "invalid". I have a ton of video files and I haven't gone back and checked all of my older stuff as I have too much. My mp4's usually play on everything. I also tried converting some of the problem avi's to mp4 and they still wouldn't play from the 320. I agree that there is a problem with the 320 UPNP/ media server but I am not sure if we should start a new thread or where as the 2.02 is no longer beta. I am not sure how many are having issues or noticed the issue with "invalid" files. Dlink is going to want to point to the problem being the device / player manufacturer problem not them. I guess the question is are others noticing the problem? Are they assuming it is the player and not the server?
-
Cable2,
I think this is worthy to get more feedback on so hopefully DLink can look into this potential bug. I will try and provide more details tonight on what file formats dont work being served via sharecenter but do through WMP. I suppose they could try and blame it on my player, but it seems there are some limitations on the DNS-320 if WMP can play the same thing with no transcoding. I just think we need to understand the limitations and then ask for what formats we would like them to add. I brought up the topic under firmware observations:
http://forums.dlink.com/index.php?topic=42695.15 (http://forums.dlink.com/index.php?topic=42695.15)
Anyone that has similar issues, PLEASE post it in the other thread.
-
If this is a repeatable bug, please post on the firmware wishlist thread and I'll add this to our "growing" list of requests. ;)
-
I believe I am facing the same issue.
When files (250mb or so) get copied over to an EXISTING folder on my DNS-320 the UPNP server is not identifying to my WD Lives (or other devices like SKIFTA) that the folder has new media in it.
Yet, if i browse the folder VIA Samba, I can clearly access the media.
If i do a manual refresh, all is well, but I shouldn't have to manually refresh.
This seemed to start happening once my UPNP folders began containing a large # of files when i moved over my MP3 files

This item is now included on the DNS-320 Firmware Wishlist sticky thread.

I just bought a DNS 320 with basic 1TB Hitachi hdd, and run the wizard setup. I have had problems with the indexing I think.
I've connected my NAS to the router, and through my computer cable & wireless I can access my NAS. wireless transfer speed is around 2mb/s and with cable it's around 9mb/s.
My first batch of transfers were on 20gb and that seems to have gone well, I can access the files through my xbox 360 video player etc.
However when I tried to throw in a bigger chunk (150gb) all the files in that map vanished or rather I couldn't see any files in that folder using my xbox anymore. I thought i could have he UPnP forced to reindex the whole thing, but no luck there. My only option as I see it is, reboot, refresh UPnP and test upload a file until it's visible in that folder, and then work my way through slowly.
If anyone has a solution I'd appreciate the help. My friend who has a synology said my problem could have something to do with overloading the index-file and thus killing it.

Hi,
I am running firmware 2.02. I just had a similar problem with about 40 gb of audio files. The entire media server was not accessible and when I checked out the settings in the GUI, the % of updated files was jumping up and down every few seconds between about 50% and down to 20% and back up again over and over. Tried restarting, no luck. Finally, I did a complete hard shutdown and then went back in the settings and did a "refresh all" and that has seemed to do the trick. But, you have to wait until the refresh completes and it takes a long time, the more files the longer the time. You will know when it completes when the hard drive activity lights stop blinking. That is what worked for me anyhow. Good luck.
-
yes, whenever i do a manual refresh, it takes a long time, but it does then work
but since I have files auto downloaded for tv shows and whatnot which then get stored on the NAS drive, having to do this manually defeats the whole auto-process I have in place.
I am not sure if the issue is simply because of the size of the index or if there is an actual bug
it does seem like people are more likely to experience this when they have a lot of files and/or large size of the files to find.
I am really hoping WD will prioritize this issue since it defeats the whole UPNP aspects of this device, making it nothing more than a storage location and the upnp worthless. at the VERY LEAST allow us to refresh on some scheduled basis, if they can't initially figure out the bug with why it doesn't automatically detect changes and index appropriately.

Hi Ionizer,
I have no solutions but a bunch of questions. Are you using the p2p function to download your TV stuff? Do these downloads create a new folder along with the download file are are the files just added to an existing folder? I am assuming the downloaded files are in a folder which is part of the upnp selection and you are not then copying the downloaded files to another folder, is this correct? If you do then transfer them to another folder (part of the upnp) do the files then show up?
I did some experimenting earlier, as I generally did not have a problem with a few files showing up when added to an already existing folder but noticed that multiple GB transfers included in a new folder did not. I did not further experiment as large file transfers such a long time.
The thing is, I am afraid Dlink is not going to jump on this UPNP problem for a long time, so a work around might be a solution for you for the time being. I would be tempted to try and use the backup function to tranfer your download folder to another location periodically, once or twice a day just to see if this will trigger the Auto Refresh function. Anyway, that is all I can think of for the time being. Good luck.

I don't seem to have any luck with the "application management >> UPnP >> Refresh all", or have I gone completely wrong. I tried to make a scan test, but SMART didn't help either.
Uploading files batch by batch only helps to a certain point, after that the problem occurs again, somewhere between movies starting with the letter K - R is when it dies... All movies are sorted into folders and stuff..

I am not using a p2p program.
I am using an application which simply downloads the information and then literally performs a copy to the
"specified folder" (a mapped drive for me on my local pc)
The specified folder is an existing folder within a UPNP specified folder.
Example:
--------
Existing folder: \TV (Shared as UPNP in dns-320 setup)
Existing folder: \TV\Simpsons (Shared inherently via the master folder, but not specifically specified since it should fall under inheritance from \TV)
New Simpsons episode gets downloaded and copy to \TV\Simpsons\The_Simpsons_S1EP1.avi
File is not showing up (Folder on DLNA isn't displaying if no existing files were in the simpsons folder) and if there was an existing file which had been manually refreshed, only that file shows up, not the new one copied over.

Hi Ionizer,
I don't use anything to copy from my windows 7 machine, I do a manual copy and that seems to work for me. I would try a manual copy just as an experiment and see if that works for you. By the way, you are using 2.02 I hope, because the earlier firmwares did not even have the alphanumeric feature working correctly. Also, which software are you using to transfer the files, is it integrated with your p2p / download or a separate item? I use something called "syncback" and that seems to work for some nas to nas backups pretty well. I am wondering if their is something incompatible with your transfer software, I know one of the other posts had trouble with the backup software they were using. That's about all I can think of right now. Good luck.

I am using 2.00 because 2.02 simply indicated it addressed two issues (3tb and time machine) which has nothing to do with what i have an issue with.
for the purposes of full disclosure, I am using a program called Alt.Binz which is nothing more than a newsgroup binary reader. It sits on my windows 7 PC, detects an NZB and downloads the data. It then proceeds to unrar it in the download folder. I then have SickBeard running which detects the final .AVI file and copies it from the Newsgroup download location to the NAS drive specific folder based on whether it's a simpsons episode, family guy, house, whatever.
Note: There is nothing special about this process. It's not really a "transfer software", it is simply performing a file move from one folder (Local drive:\blah\blah to another folder MappedNASDrive:\tv\simpsons). It's not some kind of special backup or anything else, it's just performing a move of the file. The file is verified on the nas drive, so the issue is simply that the NAS drive is not updating the index to recognize a file has been moved to it.
If I moved the file manually myself, the same issue occurs. The index is not updating automatically.
Could the index itself be broken? Is there a way to delete the index one time, generate it manually once and then hope it works fine from then on out? All of this seemed to begin breaking around the time I moved all my MP3 folders/files from my local drive to the NAS drive. That was a lot of files at once.
-
Ionizer,
I am as lost as you are, I just noticed that since I added all of the audio files to my media server, it seems to have stopped auto updating even for one file to an existing folder. I have no idea exactly what is causing the problem, and frankly, I don't feel like experimenting for myself any longer. The point is that the "auto update" on the media server is not working correctly still even with 2.02. This seems ridiculous that well over a year after it's release, Dlink still doesn't seem to be able to get a fully functional UPNP server. I think that other posts have pointed out that the UPNP server also has problems with several other playback devices not functioning. The only thing that seems to make it work is to do a manual refresh which for me takes several hours during which time the 320 is useless to me. Very, very frustrating.
-
Agreed. As this is one of the MAIN features of a device like this, it really is a critical function that needs to be looked at. I know JL has it on his list, but I am not sure when that will be looked at.
JL - Can you get any type of acknowledgement that they are able to reproduce this issue and/or are looking into it?
Otherwise all I own is a backup device unable to provide me access to the files I am backing up. 45% of NAS users utilize the device to playback video/audio/etc.
-
Well, sounds like some people has the same problem as me :) I'm looking forward to hearing the solution or when the solution will come.
However in the mean time I've managed to upload some of my movies (titles starting from A - N ) to my DNS320 under \\volume1\Movies then I made a folder no. 2 ( Movies 2) and uploaded (titles starting from O - R) I have no luck seeing the movies in the second folder (movies 2) but the movies uploaded in movies is on the index list and can be accessed. I just get a stupid code error on some of the movies. Then I just need to turn off my xbox and restart it and voila it runs, pretty stupid that I actually have to go through a ritual to make things work, just like in warhammer 40.000 novels.
EDIT: I've been refreshing, restarting, shutting down my DNS 320 and xbox in different combis to be able to come up with a ritual that would enable me to see the content of the folder "Movies 2" through the xbox, but no luck I still get the "No videos found".

Found out that HDD spindown time interferes with updates... On version 2.02 it fails updating if I set it to anything less then the times it takes to refresh the library... in my case 2 about hours... Had the Spindown time to 5 minutes (default) and it did only work for adding a small number of files at the time. After setting it to 5 hours, it completes every time.
Setup: Volume 1 is ordinary storage, Volume 2 contains the Upnp AV directories.
On update I see that both volumes are accessed, I guess the media descriptions get stored on Volume1 (hidden). Volume 2 LED blinks faster after spindown it seems...(when the update process retries to contact it... and fails, giving high CPU load and lockup of the process and lower write speeds ... even after the disk is spun up again.)
Workaround: Set spindown time to a sufficiently long time to let the process complete:
DLINK needs to look into this... the update process is not prohibiting HDD spindown.

I used the UPnP for a while and did not have any issues.
However, after installing fun plug, I moved to MediaTomb UPnP server and like it a lot better.
If you are having issues with the build-in, give MediaTomb a try.

firmware 2.02
2 TB HD standard mode
M. refresh took 48 hrs to complete only 50% ... let the unit shutdown. The unit is ok to play HD movies over the network but a lot of stuff isn't working. Ajax explorer ? Tried to access from outside the network but did not find any way.

I have recently installed fun_plug, which includes mediatomb. I followed the instructions here:http://nas-tweaks.net/82/installing-and-uninstalling-packages-and-activation-and-deactivation-of-daemons-in-fonz-fun_plug/
However, I am a complete noob and I can't "see" it. I started it following the command line in putty, but I can't see any ui in the DNS-320 ui, so I cannot configure it. And I cannot find any post with instructions. Could you kindly explain me how to make this work? I am excited to make it work since the embedded UPnP server in the DNS-320 does not pick up subtitles when streaming movies and, AFAIK, Mediatomb does. Thank you.
And
