I've recently upgraded my broadband connection to a 70/10 Mb/s line, and received a Thompson modem. All testing done on cable, not WiFi!
When connecting directly to the Thompson modem I get 70/10 http://www.speedtest.net/result/1637883723.png (http://www.speedtest.net/result/1637883723.png)
But, when I connect through the modem i get 9/9 http://www.speedtest.net/result/1637875472.png (http://www.speedtest.net/result/1637875472.png)
After this initial test my downstream has dropped, and stabilized around 2 Mb/s.
I've tried setting the WAN port on the DIR-825 to auto, 100, and 1000, but no success. With my old Thompson modem and my 25/2.5 Mb/s line I got full speed through the DIR-825 router, so I know that the router is capable of 25 Mb/s down, and 9 Mb/s up at least.

What Hardware version is your router? Look at sticker under router.
What Firmware version is currently loaded? Found on routers web page under status.
What ISP Modem Model Number do you have? Stand Alone or built in router?
Some things to try:
Ensure DNS IP addresses are being filled in under Setup/Internet/Manual? You can find these under Status/Device Info/Wan section.
Turn off ALL QoS (DIR only) GameFuel (DGL only and if ON.) options. Advanced/QoS or Gamefuel.
Turn off Advanced DNS Services if you have this option under Setup/Internet/Manual.
Turn on DNS Relay under Setup/Networking.
Setup DHCP reserved IP addresses for all devices on the router. Setup/Networking
Ensure devices are set to auto obtain an IP address.
Set Firewall settings to Endpoint Independent for TCP and UDP.
Turn off all anti virus and firewall programs on PC while testing. 3rd party firewalls are not generally needed when using routers as they are effective on blocking malicious inbound traffic.
Turn off all devices accept for one wired PC while testing.
Check cable between Modem and Router, swap out to be sure. Cat6 is recommended.
Maybe someone can review your router settings with you using teamviewer. (http://www.teamviewer.com)
-
Thank you for your response. All tests still done via cable, and not wifi. I even tested with a couple of different cables to see if that made a difference.
Just today I flashed the router with firmware 2.05EU, and did one factory reset before loading my config.bin again.
The modem is a Thomson TCM471, which has no router function.
A slight improvement on the broadband, I'm now on 6 Mb/s instead of 2 Mb/s, but nowhere near the 70 Mb/s I have when I bypass the router. It still baffles me that the previous Thomson modem gave me 25 Mb/s down, and 2.5 Mb/s up, just like my ISP promised, so I know that the DIR-825 with current configuration, and cables are capable of more than the 6 Mb/s I'm getting now.
A DIR-655 costs me around USD 100, but I'm reluctant to pay that if the result is the same.
Any more advise?
-
Since you updated FW, did you happen to follow the FW update sticky process?
Please review it and let us know.
I would recommend doing a factory reset and not load the old config file and test once more.
-
Yes, I did make sure to read the sticky prior to doing the firmware, and I also did a speedtest.net prior to loading the old config. The only improvement was going from 2 Mb/s to 6 Mb/s, both with/without the old config.
I was hesitant to do the firmware, because I agree with the term "if it works, don't fix it", but since I didn't get full speed I was willing to risk it.

That would be great, any volunteers?

send me a PM with the ID and PW

I would like to thank FurryNutz for support above, and beyond anything I've EVER met in any support forum. This is by far the best response, and qualified support I've ever had, period! Thanks again, and I'll keep you posted on my progress.
So far we've gotten the speed up to 50 Mb/s down, and 10 Mb/s up. ;D
-
Ok, lets us know how the cables work out and trying a different router. Keep us posted.
-
No problem with speed here.
I'm very please with this router.

Would be interresting to see screens of your settings for WAN, LAN and wireless?

maybe he can send you them in a private PM. ::)
Any more news on your situation TrondS?

Waiting for CAT6 cables. But for now it's flipping between 70/10, and 30/10. Not sure if it's speedtest.net, or the link between my ISP and speedtest that's under too much stress. Been testing the download using torrent, and usually it's around 3 Mb/s, but it's peaking around 5 Mb/s every now and then.
Another weird issue that has occurred the past few days, one of my laptops looses wifi every now and then, the one you connected to. The other laptop and my Android still have connection though.
Also I found that the DIR-825 was awfully hot when being stressed, might have something to do with the fact that the modem was placed directly on top of it? Probably NOT the best idea... ;)
-
But, now something else has come up. On my laptop, that usually connected with 130 Mbps to the DIR-825, now I only get 65 Mbps. The other laptop still connects at 130 Mbps. What gives? I've tried rebooting the device, and turning it off/on again.
-
ya not a good idea for the modem to be on top of the router. can be beside it. Mine is.
Have you changed any wireless options? Channels or 20/40?
Are the wireless card drivers up to date?
Also where you able to test out a different router by chance? Test this one at a different place?
-
Same channel, still on 20/40, and the laptop drivers have been unchanged for past 6 months, and they did give me 130 Mbps up until the other day.
-
Odd. Any other WiFi near by you?
-
Not that I'm aware of. I just forced it to N only, then back to G and N, and now I'm at 135 Mbps again. Seems like it's not so stable, and might fall back to 65 Mbps again. Could be that I fried it the other day, with too much heat.
-
What FW version are you at now?
-
Hardware Version: B1 Firmware Version: 2.05EU
-
Curious if it's worth trying that beta that Geraner's using?
Did you get to try a different router or take this one to your buddys place by chance?
-
I haven't gotten around to that part. So far it seems to be working at 70/10, although it does drop to around 40/10 every now and then. So far so good, and unless something changes over the next few days I'll keep things as they are.
-
Ok, keep us posted. Im wondering if this is an ISP issue.
-
I do believe that the DIR-825 is A) not powerful enough, or B) defective in some sort. I just had 4-5 torrents going, and as soon as the router is picking up speed it's freezing up on me.
I've ordered myself a Netgear WNDR4500 router to see if this makes things smoother.
-
ok, let us know how it goes.
-
The good neighbor policy on "N" mode will cause the wireless to do that if it thinks it hears another WiFi signal(maybe even a microwave oven?), it will default back to a 20Mhz channel instead of 40Mhz without you doing a thing, then you think the router is bad but it is programmed to do that(it is written in to the 802.11N standard)....... Being the drop is from 130 to 65, I would put money on it. If you don't want the good neighbor policy, go back to a draft "N" firmware.
Tested my speed last night, 75 x 3(seen peaks over 100), 9ms ping time. I refuse to pay for the "big boy" package. Guess I will just have to live with it! During peak times I slow down to 35 X 3(The Horror!).
-
But how come the laptop in the same room is still on 130 Mbps? They are but 3 feet apart.
-
But how come the laptop in the same room is still on 130 Mbps? They are but 3 feet apart.
That is a good question, are both laptops running the same type of wifi card? I finally got tired of messing around and bought everyone in the house a cheap USB "N" WiFi dongle off of flea bay, about the size of a thumb nail, now everyone in the house has 130Mbps 24 x 7(the dongles have a VERY limited range), except my laptop, it has 300Mbps 24x7 with it's built in WiFi. Seems every WiFi device I had to support was different, the Xbox 360 slim being the WORST!
Are the drivers for the laptops all updated?
-
These little adapters here(see below link), they are cheap on sale. The down side is the range and they don't do 300 Mbps. They sure made my life alot easier then supporting 5 different laptops with 5 different problems.

-
Thanks for the info Patrick. Hoping that his router is ok too. Any additional thoughts on that?
-
The laptops are different brands, and has different WLAN cards. My laptop only supports 2.4Ghz, the other one both 2.4Ghz and 5Ghz. My laptop (a HP) has the option of upgrading the WLAN card, but the upgrade has 3 antennas, and the laptop only 2, so I'm not sure how that's going to affect the performance. The router is situated at the loft, but there are no walls blocking the loft and our downstairs living room where the laptops are. The thumb drives would have no trouble covering the range I'm sure.
The Netgear N900 is in the mail, and will probably show up here on Friday, or Saturday, so we'll see how that goes.
With regards to the beta firmware mentioned earlier, has this proven stable, and do I have the option of downgrading to 2.05, or even 2.01?
-
Where did you get the 2.05EU firmware form?
There a specific web site?
I looked that EU site under UK and only see 2.01EU thats the latest.
Theres no notes regarding the prevention of downgrading once pasted a certain version so I think you could down grade ok, unless it's programmed into what you have now and you wont' find out till you try.
Didn't you say you were in Sweden or am I thinking of someone else? So many people on here. ::)
-
Can't remember where I found that one, maybe 2.01EU is the latest official? I think I used the web interface on the router, and that linked me to 2.05EU.
Anyway, I'm in Norway, not in Sweden. Just checked with WiFi analyser on my Android, and my net is peaking around -50dB on channel 11. There are a few week ones trying to access channel 11 also, but they are probably too far away.
I have the router set on 2.4Ghz, 20/40 auto, fixed on channel 11, N and G only, and the 5 Ghz is disabled since none of my clients run on that anyway.
Once the wife's in bed, I'll do a factory reset and see where that brings me.
-
Ok, Even the Norwegian site doesn't mention any 2.05 FW. Only 2.01.
Might give downgrading a go to 2.01.
Let us know what you find after a factory reset.
-
The filename of the update is DIR825B1_FW205EUB08, and I found it through one of the other forum threads.
-
Thanks for the info Patrick. Hoping that his router is ok too. Any additional thoughts on that?
He has a new router coming, can't hurt to try it and see if the Dir-825 is the culprit. Being almost certain the laptops depending on how old they are have an unknown version of draft "N" in them. Letting the OS power down the WiFi adapter is a setting I always turn off in my windows setting for the WiFi adapter, that causes some problems like you are seeing sometimes too.
The Netgear router that you mentioned I just pulled out of a family members house and replaced it with a D-Link, it would NOT work with their Kindle, it worked with Ipods, Androids, Laptops, you name it, just not the Kindle. Since I put the D-link in, no problems. This was just a couple of weeks back, still to this day, I have no clue why the Netgear would not work with the Kindle.
Some times there are hardware differences that even an engineer can't explain, that is why I bought the little dongles, one works, they all work. I bought like 8 of them(only needed 5), I was affraid they would come out with a new rev and screw everything up with my "if one works they all work" theroy.
I wanted to use channel 13 on my network at home, so I went out and looked for EU software for the Dir-825, I do believe that 2.05EU is the version that went from draft "N" to the new 802.11N, dont remember where I found it, but it was legit and changed some other things for EU compliance too that I was not happy about, so I did not do the switch and stuck with US 2.06.
-
Hmm B08, means I believe it's a beta version and thus not an actual release. I think. ::) I generally follow whats posted officially on the DLink web site, unless your a shade tree engineer like some of on on here then thats ok too. Just has pit falls.
I would recommend and try to go back to 2.01EU. Follow the update process in the FW update sticky on here and see. If you get a message that says, you can't go back or it's the wrong version, stop there and don't do anything else. Probably can't do much after that.
When did you do the update to 2.05? If you remember. Do you remember having these issues before you updated?
Let us know.
-
The firmware update was done early in this thread, as a response to the fact that I didn't get the actual 70/10 speeds as my modem reported when bypassing the DIR-825. I did a firmware update just before I did a factory reset, and after that I must admit that WLAN has acted weird, mostly on the HP using the Ralink WLAN. The Lenovo has been acting normal afaik.
I'll try to go back to 2.01EU and see what that brings in terms of modem speed, and if WLAN is back to normal again.
-
I had a LOT of problems going to 2.05US, I actually did the 30/30/30 thing the fifth or 6th time around and it worked much better.
I did it as a last ditch effort, but I am glad I did it, this is the best router I have ever owned to date! No one could help me. I even did resets like it says on "how to flash a new ROM sticky". No luck.
I can run a Xbox 360 game, video chat(high def), streaming video(high def netflix) and a PC game all at the same time with no issues through the router(wireless and wired).
I do have to run 2 WiFi AP's, otherwise the Xbox lags though, it is VERY packet intensive!
-
It is Beta and there is a newer beta it appears. I think I might go back...........

Surprised you had problems updating however I did notice 2.05 had 2 files with it. I didn't have any problems.
I've learned to use the FW update process when doing any updates listed in the sticky.
TrondS, Let us know how going back did. Patrick noticed there is a more recent Beta version for EU units. Might be worth a try here too.
I recommend not loading any saved configuration files until you test out the router and see what your speed and connections are first.
Let us know.

It was a bear, I reset it several different times, as long as I would use 2.03, everthing worked GREAT. When I would go to 2.05 becuase of the IPV6 updates, major problems. This was before you came along and there was no support. I was looking into DD-WRT when I found out the 30-30 thing brought you into the boot loader, first time was a charm, everything worked. A couple of other people had problems and sent their routers back swearing they were junk. Glad I have a hard head! ;D I did use the sticky going from 2.05 to 2.06, no problems at all :) And I don't have to run a Verizon fios router to get the bandwidth throughput. Cisco/Linksys came right out and called me a liar about my 15 x 2 internet speed which was unheard of at the time except for FIOS. D-links were already doing 100Mbps with the firewall on, Linksys was doing 8-10Mbps.
-
Wow, called you a liar huh? Well glad that I was able to provide some support after the fact. Glad it's all up and running now. Now I hope we can figure out Mr. Norsks issues with him. Hehe.
-
Wow, called you a liar huh?
Cisco called me a liar! They told me my current provider only provided 8Mbps and only FIOS had the kind of speed I claimed I had! When I E-Mailed him a copy of a speed test, the guy from Cisco told me those could be manipulated to show anything(I think I was getting 20Mbps actually and paying for 15Mbps). I was told if I was running that kind of speed that I needed to go to a commercial product(by linksys), they handed me off to Cisco. Cisco quoted me $495.00 plus they would take $50 off for my current Linksys product that I had just bought for $100(the commercial product would handle 24Mbps). Did some research on netbuilder, took the Linksys back to Best Buy, picked up a Dir-655 from Office depot and never looked back......... Cisco's customer service was almost nasty when they found out I was a EE and knew what I was talking about. They actually banned me from their support forums for calling them out on the speed issue and a wide open firewall when it was enabled.... Call me D-Link Fanboi if you want, but D-Link gave me value for my money, Cisco gave me a hard time! Tried a 2nd hand FIOS router for a while, they worked great but where short on features, the Xbox was a problem with the FIOS router too.
Good luck with getting trondS working, once you get a good firmware, these things are like toasters, you just use them!
Later!
Pat
-
Wow and banned you from the forums. LOL. Ya, Cisco has some good stuff, however when they don't recognize that they have made a mistake and don't realize it, eh, time to find another place to hang. Glad your around man. Thanks for all the help here. Trying to keep things running smooth there. All help is appreciated. Promise not to ban you here. hehe. ;D

FurryNutz, getting ready to do some testing on both 2.01EU, and the latest 2.05EUB09 firmware once the kids are in bed. I'm going to deactivate WLAN for the testing period, but I was wonder which other feature(s) I should deactivate to make the router perform. I'm guessing that QOS should be off, but what about SPI? Any other features I should deactivate?
-
I would test right after the last factory defaults. It's ok to turn off the wireless radios. It should run well with out having to turn off anything else like if you just pulled out of the box. Test as is. After you get initial testing in, you can turn of things like QoS, WISH, Protected WiFi, SPI and do some follow on testing. Keep us posted. Hope the 2.01 works better.
-
I've already downgraded to 2.01EU and my laptop is back to 130 Mbps. If this is because of a factory reset, or firmware remains to see. I'll get back to you later tonight with some results.
-
Qos always seems to be a problem for me, at least manually set it to the speed you have. Mine always seems to default to 1Mbps. When I manually set it to the speed I have, it works as advertised.
-
Ya I have noticed that sometimes QoS and automatic uplink speeds works well either manual or auto. I see some situations where that uplink speeds are higher than 5Mb, it's best to leave it set for Auto. I have a 2Mb uplink and have mine set for manual 4096 just to give the router a bit of over head even though the link is pretty much capped at 2Mb, I see a tad bit over 2 and thats about it.
Keep us posted TrondS. Exercise that FW.
-
Okay, so here are the results of my testing:
Test performed on a HP ProBook 4520s running Windows 7 Professional 64-bit. I used a wired Gigabit connection from the laptop. Test was performed in Firefox 8.0.1 with Flash 11.1.102.55. Windows 7 firewall activated, Microsoft Security Essentials active. I did no change in laptop position, wiring, or configuration on the test machine during the testing.
All configurations tested 3 times, and I'm giving the average of the three performed tests:
Test 1 was performed directly with the cable modem and gave me; 23 ms ping, 70,52 Mb/s DL, 9,79 Mb/s UL
Test 2 was performed with DIR-825/2.01EU firmware and gave me; 20 ms ping, 32,06 Mb/s DL, 7,82 Mb/s UL
Test 3 was performed with DIR-825/2.05EUB09 firmware and gave me; 23 ms ping, 68,92 Mb/s DL, 9,80 Mb/s UL
After tests were performed I also tested the WLAN speed towards the built in WLAN card with latest drivers installed:
Test 2 gave me 135 Mb/s link towards DIR-825/2.01EU
Test 3 gave me 65 Mb/s link towards DIR-825/2.05EUB09
So, it boils down to running 2.01EU and getting 130 Mb/s WLAN, or 2.05EUB09 and getting 70 Mb/s cable.
For my WLAN settings I have only 2.4GHz activated, Mixed 802.11n and 802.11g, locked on channel 11, auto 20/40, and visible, security mode WPA-Personal and WPA2 Only with AES cipher. The 2.4GHz band is on high with WMM and Short GI enabled.
Not sure what else I can do to "force" the WLAN client to connect at 130 Mb/s?
-
Nice results man.
What happens if you disable Short GI for WLAN?
Can you now test with QoS OFF, make sure ALL options, even grayed ones are unchecked?
I would test again with out any windows security SW running as well. Just to be sure thats not interfering.
Sounds like the Beta FW might be your best bet. I'm curious if you would see the same issues if you connected a different type/model wireless adapter to the HP Laptop.
I think the beta FW would be good, if we can narrow down whats causing the wireless to not connect at 130.

I disabled Short GI (even though I don't know what that is), and I turned the firewall off, together with the anti virus, but the link is still stuck on 65 Mbps. The Lenovo has a Broadcom WLAN adapter, and that connects at 130 Mbps just 3 feet away.
I'm starting to think that 2.05EUB09 isn't 100% compatible with the Ralink RT3090BC4 WLAN adapter located in my HP ProBook. Maybe any officials from D-Link is scanning the forums to pick up this, and can work on a fix in the next beta?
For now I'm willing to run on 65 Mbps WLAN, as long as my cable speed is 98% of what I'm paying for. My only concern is that it seems like the router is choking once I start pushing the router on download. I'm exploring the possibilities of swapping the WLAN card with a Intel N 6300 WLAN module, but this has 3 antennas, and my laptop only has 2, so I'm a bit concerned how that's going to work.
-
Ya I think theres a possible incompatibility issue here. IT would be a good test if you can find say a USB WiFi adapter that can do 130 or 300Mbs and see if they will connect.
I'll pass this along to my contact at DLink and see if they can review this. I can't promise anything. If they are doing some betas then this is good info for them.
Do some testing with downloading too and see how it goes. With and with out PC security, wired vs wireless.
-
I am having the same problem.
D-Link DIR-825 firmware 2.02NA
Thomson TM475
When I eliminate the router, I get 30MB/s download. With the router in between, I get 3Mb/s download. The upload is 1MB/s in both case which is the rated speed for my service.
I have switched the cables to Cat6, but no joy. I switched QoS off and tried Auto versus 1000Mb/s.
-
jmac, did you try to set the interface to 100? that was the only thing that helped me.
-
Wonder if these Thompson modems could have some incompatibility with these routers. :-\
Jmac:
What ISP Service do you have? Cable or DSL?
Some things to try:
Ensure DNS IP addresses are being filled in under Setup/Internet/Manual? You can find these under Status/Device Info/Wan section.
I've got a 825 that had 2.02NA and never saw this issue. However my modems were SB 6120 and now SB 6121 cable modems
-
> What ISP Service do you have? Cable or DSL?
Cable
> Some things to try:
Tried all of these things. No luck except that setting the firewall to endpoint independent provides a slight improvement.
When I change the speed setting to 100Mb/s the download speed went up to 15Mbps. With it set to anything else the speed is 3Mbps. With the DIR-825 removed altogether, the speed is 30Mbps (at the service level for my cable).
I used two different host computers: a MacBookPro and a machine running Linux with an RTL8111/8168B. No difference in any test. So it's not the host.
I assume that setting the speed to 100Mbps limits my internal LAN to 100Mbps even though all my devices have Gigabit ethernet.
Thanks to TrondS and FurryNutz for the help.
-
I don't believe that setting it to 100 will limit your LAN, that's for the WAN setting. At least my two wired clients show up with 1 Gbps connection when i hover over their icon.
-
Yes, setting the WAN port speed mode only limits the WAN port, not the LAN port speeds.
-
Okay, just got my Netgear N900 and setting it up was a breeze, at least if you know your way around the DIR-825. The router popped up at 70/10 Mbit right away, no need to force the WAN side to anything. On the WLAN side, the Ralink still connects at 65 Mbps, while the Broadcom connects at 104 Mbps, which is still odd, router is set to 217 Mbps for max.
What is the selling point for me tho; I just took a test torrent download, and it maxed out at 8.1 Mbps, whereas the DIR-825 totally froze around 3-4Mbps. If this is a weakness with the DIR-825 in general, or if it's mine that's fried I have no way of telling you.
-
Ok, I'm thinking there a possible incompatibility and or fault with the FW and the ISP modem and DLink. Sounds like you've tested every possibility with various FW versions with the 825. However I feel there is a probable issue with your WiFi adapter on your PC. The DLink will let it connect at the higher rate using a particular version of FW however even using the new NG router exhibits the same issue. I would try a different adapter, use a USB add-on or something you can plug in and get the faster connection speed.
Overall, The 825 will probably give you what your expecting with the ISP modem using the Beta FW 2.05EUB09 as I think this might resolve that and compatibility issue with the ISP modem...however again, your wireless adapter seems to be in contention here and should be tested out using a a different adapter.
I think you have a good idea by now on the whole situation.
Keep us posted and thanks for all the testing and information. I wish we were closer, i'd have you send me your router to test out. LOL
-
Thanks FurryNutz, I'll probably try to get an Intel Wireless Ultimate-N 6200 module for my laptop, I'll start checking out Ebay for some.
-
Ok.Have seen some issues with intel however over all they should work. Keep us posted.
