ya not a good idea for the modem to be on top of the router. can be beside it. Mine is.

Have you changed any wireless options? Channels or 20/40?
Are the wireless card drivers up to date?

Also where you able to test out a different router by chance? Test this one at a different place?

Same channel, still on 20/40, and the laptop drivers have been unchanged for past 6 months, and they did give me 130 Mbps up until the other day.

Odd. Any other WiFi near by you?

Not that I'm aware of. I just forced it to N only, then back to G and N, and now I'm at 135 Mbps again. Seems like it's not so stable, and might fall back to 65 Mbps again. Could be that I fried it the other day, with too much heat.

Curious if it's worth trying that beta that Geraner's using?

Did you get to try a different router or take this one to your buddys place by chance?

I haven't gotten around to that part. So far it seems to be working at 70/10, although it does drop to around 40/10 every now and then. So far so good, and unless something changes over the next few days I'll keep things as they are.

I do believe that the DIR-825 is A) not powerful enough, or B) defective in some sort. I just had 4-5 torrents going, and as soon as the router is picking up speed it's freezing up on me.

I've ordered myself a Netgear WNDR4500 router to see if this makes things smoother.

The good neighbor policy on "N" mode will cause the wireless to do that if it thinks it hears another WiFi signal(maybe even a microwave oven?), it will default back to a 20Mhz channel instead of 40Mhz without you doing a thing, then you think the router is bad but it is programmed to do that(it is written in to the 802.11N standard)....... Being the drop is from 130 to 65, I would put money on it. If you don't want the good neighbor policy, go back to a draft "N" firmware.

Tested my speed last night, 75 x 3(seen peaks over 100), 9ms ping time. I refuse to pay for the "big boy" package. Guess I will just have to live with it! During peak times I slow down to 35 X 3(The Horror!).

But how come the laptop in the same room is still on 130 Mbps? They are but 3 feet apart.

That is a good question, are both laptops running the same type of wifi card? I finally got tired of messing around and bought everyone in the house a cheap USB "N" WiFi dongle off of flea bay, about the size of a thumb nail, now everyone in the house has 130Mbps 24 x 7(the dongles have a VERY limited range), except my laptop, it has 300Mbps 24x7 with it's built in WiFi. Seems every WiFi device I had to support was different, the Xbox 360 slim being the WORST!

Are the drivers for the laptops all updated?

These little adapters here(see below link), they are cheap on sale. The down side is the range and they don't do 300 Mbps. They sure made my life alot easier then supporting 5 different laptops with 5 different problems.
