Title: NPAPI deprecation
Post by: Fraxlin on November 21, 2015, 03:40:12 AM
Hi all!
Almost all major browsers are deprecating NPAPI based plug-ins, and Java is one of this. Java applets are a core component for many D-Link cloud cams, including DCS-932L. Is there any plan to handle this situation in the foreseeable future (maybe with a firmware upgrade)?
The current DCS-932L browser compatibly list is:
- Google Chrome [NOT SUPPORTED]: the workaround to reactivate NPAPI doesn't work anymore: https://support.google.com/chrome/answer/6213033?hl=en
- Microsoft Edge [NOT SUPPORTED]: ActiveX and Java never worked on this browser: https://blogs.windows.com/msedgedev/2015/05/06/a-break-from-the-past-part-2-saying-goodbye-to-activex-vbscript-attachevent/
- Opera [PARTIALLY SUPPORTED]: works only on Windows, but in the near future the support will be dropped
- Mozilla Firefox [PARTIALLY SUPPORTED]: by the end of next year, support will be dropped on all platforms: https://blog.mozilla.org/futurereleases/2015/10/08/npapi-plugins-in-firefox/
- Internet Explorer [SUPPORTED]: but in the next future, the browser itself will be abandoned

Even Oracle recommends to move away from Java applets: https://blogs.oracle.com/java-platform-group/entry/npapi_plugin_perspectives_and_the

I'm evaluating to buy another couple of these cams, but I want them to last a bit more than a couple of years ... :-\

You'll have to use IE for now. I presume D-Link is working on alternative solutions for there plug-ins.
