Hello...
Not the exact same router... but almost the exact same problem. ..
Dir655: last couple months... every 15 - 20 days i have 1 device that wont aquire an ip address. Yesterday it was my wii U, 17 days b4 that it was my wifes phone. But other devices work fine... its very strange. The only way to get the device to aquire an ip address is to reboot the 655.
This is my favorite router, ive gone back to this one after trying a dir 860 and 827.
I just tried turning off mac filtering. Thinking maybe for some reason the 655 thinks this is one of the mac addresses i have blocked. I guess i will wait and see if it makes a difference.
The other thing i was gonna try was turning on the "always broadcast " in the dhcp settings
I have tried the usual stuff.. factory reset.. reloading FW...
Its not a big deal... but im in the same boat as radubn... once a router is setup properly... i think it should just run... and very rarely need to be rebooted.

What channel is the router set to?
Seems like your in a idea environment so the router should be experiencing any issues.
One thing I might do if this is seen again, download v2.11 or 2.12 and do the following, factory reset the router, manually load the FW file. factory reset once more then set up from scratch. Don't load any saved config files.
Does the router feel over warm or hot?
-
Router is set to channel 3. Its not being used by anybody but me.
When i moved 2 years ago i did a factory reset... reloaded 2.11 ... did another factory reset and set up from scratch. I also did this again about 6 months ago when i went back to this router.
I was unaware there was a version 2.12
Router does not feel warm or hot
-
Please switch channels to 1 6 or 11 as all other channels are not primary and are sideband channels used by the routers wifi drivers. Set channel 11.
-
Interesting... I didn't know that. I was under the impression to just use a channel that was open.
Should i still use 1, 6 or 11 even if one of my neighbors are using them?
Thanks for the info
-
If the signal from your neighbors is very low then you can use the same channel.

made it 14 days... and just now my laptop and wii u all of a sudden cant connect to my 2.4 wifi...
wii u error code is "could not aquire an ip address."
but my phone (galaxy s6) connected is to the 5ghz access point (dir-860l), and its working fine, and the galaxy tablet is on the 2.4 wifi also working fine.
tried my work phone (galaxy s5) and it wont connect to the 2.4, or 5ghz, it fails to aquire an ip address.
i manually configured the ip address on my laptop, it connected and is working fine.
I will try manually configuring the wii u... when my son is done playin video games
so something is messed up in the dhcp server...
all i really have left to try is enabling "always broadcast" in the dhcp settings
or i guess i could set static ips for the devices that dont leave my house...
-
What channel are you using on the 655? 860L?
Are both 655 and 860L radios going at the same time?
-
i guess i should add... all of my devices have dhcp reservations... so there is no ip conflicts...
-

channel 6 on the 655. i just checked... and nobody else around me is on channel 6
only using 5ghz on the 860... channel 36.
the 2.4 is turned off on the 860
-
might turn OFF the 2.4Ghz radio on the 655 and enable it on the 860L and see how it does.

with that setup the 655 would still be in control of the dhcp...
I dont know if that will solve my problem...
-
Yes, if your still using the 655 as the main host router then it will control the DCHP.
Is the 860L running as a 2ndary AP?
Do you have reserved IP addresses set up for each device on the 655?

yes and yes

i had a chance to get on the wii u... I manually set the ip/ subnet mask/ gateway/ and dns servers... boom... it connected right away...
-
Besure when your using static IP addresses, use a IP address thats outside of the 655s DCHP IP address pool. Use something between 192.168.0.2 thru .99 or .200 thru .254.
-
wife just got home... her laptop... same problem... cant aquire ip address on 2.4ghz and 5ghz wifi...
I enabled always broadcast in the dhcp settings... rebooted 655... guess ill wait a couple weeks and see what happens....
-
I'd swap out the 655 for the 860L and test.
Maybe someone from the forums can review your configuration using Teamviewer.
-
I dont really wanna go back to the 860. It didnt have this problem when it was my main host router for about 6 months. it was ok... but I like the QoS better on the 655. and the 655 seems quicker to respond/ load pages when surfing the web... plus the menus when you log into the 860 seemed a bit buggy...
I'll just wait and see if this setting change makes a difference. and go from there...
-
Ok. You may need to factory reset, then turn OFF ALL devices. Save for one wired LAN PC.
Do a IP reservation on the LAN PC. Then turn on one more device and do a reservation. Keep doing a reservation on graduating devices until all are reserved.
I haven't seen this behavior before and presume this maybe a configuration issue.
Keep us posted.

ok i will keep you posted
that is exactly how I setup my ip reservations...

How many devices do you have connected total?

How many devices do you have connected total?
man.. its like you were reading my mind... :)
I was just gonna post... is it possible im just overworking this router?... at any given time i have 8 - 12 devices, wired and wireless connected. I mean this router is like 10 years old...
-
IT should be able to handle at least 20. It's been a while since I've had my Rev B online however when I did last, I had around 15 devices. Never saw any issues. One thing you might do if this happens again, Turn OFF all devices accept for one wired PC. Factory reset, re-load v2.11 or v2.12 FW. Factory reset and reconfigure from scratch all doing this with IE or FF. Don't load any saved configuration from file. I might bring my Rev B out and test. ::)

what other newer dlink routers use the same style QoS as the 655?
I know my dir827 did...
I dont like the QoS on the 860... and i think the newest dlink routers... the QoS is even different from that...
-
The 868L and 866L are the last old generation UI model routers. I love the 868L. ;D
-
I actually had the house to myself this morning...
so I decided to factory reset my router(with the reset button on the back of the 655)... reload 2.11FW(with a wired connection)... factory reset again(with the reset button on the back of the 655)... setup the router from scratch. made sure to reserve the IP addresses 1 at a time... so i guess I will wait and see how it goes
i did notice i weird thing... the first time i factory reset the router by logging into the router (192.168.0.1) ... going to tools/ system/ restore factory defaults... but when it was finished rebooting it didnt take me to the setup wizard page... like its supposed to after a factory reset. plus some of my settings were saved... which of course they shouldnt be. thats why i did the reset with the switch on the back of the unit.
im pretty sure the last time i set up this router from scratch.. i did my factory defaults by logging into the router... maybe this had something to do with my problem the whole time?..?.. it wasnt actually factory defaulting properly... or resetting like it was supposed to...
-
Try clearing your browser cache after you do the factory reset. Exit the browser fully then re-open.
Hope the set up from scratch will resolve this. Keep us posted.
-
well... the longest it lasted was 14 days b4... "failing to aquire ip address again" on devices..
I dunno.. maybe I will just go back to the dir-860...
or look for something newer... I saw the dir-880 at costco for $150.. thats like $40 cheaper than walmart...
wife might divorce me if i buy another router.. lol... :-\
-
I think you should use the 860L as the main host router and AP. You can use the 655 as a wired AP if needed later on.
-
the thing I dont understand is why does the router work perfectly for 14 - 20 days... ???
its not like this problem ever happens after an hour.... or 10 hours... or 2 days... its always after the 14 day mark...
-
Can be interferences possibly and configuration.
Does the 655 feel hot? In a well ventilated room?
Have you set up IP reservations for each device?
-
I set up my neighbors 655 the exact same way and he doesnt have this problem...
Its not warm or hot. Its well ventilated on the main floor of my house. Im pretty sure you already asked me this...
Yes i set up my ip reservations one at a time... starting with 1 wired lan pc.
What kind of interference only happens every 2 weeks?
-
You neighbor have the same Rev 655?
How far away is this neighbor?
What channels is he using?
What channels are you using again?
Sorry for the asking again...
One test and you'd have to ask ur neighbor, swap routers for a short period of time.
-
Yes. Same revision
Across the street... i dunno 100 feet
He uses 1
I use 6
No problem
Well it would have to be at least 2 weeks. And i have to factory reset his router... set it up for all my devices... and vice versa my router for his devices. Then if my router ended up being faulty... i would have to factory reset his router and set it up again. It would be way less work for me to just buy another 655
-
Any one using channel 11?
-
As if right now 2 people are using channel 11. you really think think this has something to do with what channel im on...??..
-
are you the only one using 6?
Might try 11 as a test.
-
Let us know how this goes...
-
actually as sad as it is... i think the 655 might be goin on the shelf for now. I just found a used dgl-5500 for $40 ;D
I've always wanted to try out a dgl-5500...
I will most likely see you in that forum. thank you for tryin to help me with the dhcp/ ip problem on my 655... its much appreciated
-
See you over on the 5500 forum. ;)
