Email sys logs
« on: March 13, 2010, 10:51:23 PM »

I know you have touched on this several times but a search did not help my situation.

I am using a comcast.net email account. I have tried to set this up with sender email the same and with a gmail account I have. I have used both ports 587, 465. my server is set up as smtp.comcast.net with authentication.

I still can not get it to sent an email. When I click on send email now I do get a pop up box that says
"email will be sent to myname@comcast.net". But when I refresh comcast's email page I don't receive it.

Any Ideas?

unless our ISP specifically needs ports open for there email, most email ISPs don't, you shouldn't have to open any port for these ISPs. I wouldn't be surprised though. If your having email issues, I would call and ask the ISP if there is something special they require for email. Most of us on here are using pretty much default settings for the router aside the gamefuel for gaming and WiFi settings. Other then that, the router doesn't need any configurations for email unless there are special needs for ISPs and that would also checked in the email programs that you might be using, i.e. OutLook, Thunderbird or Outlook Express. Again I would talk to the ISP about the settings there to ensure there set up correctly.

Ooh, I can help with this.  Now I don't know all that much about Comcast, but I suppose its pretty universal.

First go into Comcast online email site and make sure any rules, filters or spamm settings are off. This will make sure your not receiving the email for some simple reason. This will also confirm that the username and password are correct. Then go make sure any and all email clients are shut down or deactivated. Then use:

From: Username@comcast.net
To: Username@comcast.net
Server: SMTP.Comcast.net
Port: 465
Enable
Account name: Username (No @cox.net)
Password: Your password
Verify: Your password.

If that doesn't work, screw it, just use Gmail. Heck, use gmail anyway. I just wanted to see if there is a solution. For more info, I also found by Comcast.

PS. Am I incredibly dense or is the graphical interface for this forum non functional? What code is it? Sure in heck isn't HTML.

Thanks guys but I am still having this issue. I have tried both comcast and gmail accounts and settings. I have also used ports 25, 465, 587. I always get the "Email has been sent to username@email" dialog everytime I click on the email now button.  ???

y r u wanting the logs anyways...?

I found that the logs I wanted (ie, when the router was locking up) are not available because the system locked up.

OK... enough ranting...   ::)  If you really want them, standup your own internal mail server to catch them for you.  There are lots of choices for this and just run it as a me@me.local domain account.

Well I am into sending logs to certain internet sites that track firewall intrusion detection log entries . And I would love to set mine up to email both to myself and directly to the monitor.

This can't be so hard. I know it is probably user error, but I do not know what I am doing wrong.

Try disabling authentication. Comcast doesn't require it if you're in their network (eg, using a cable modem).

I think your looking at this wrong. I think you ARE sending the email, but your just not getting them. The common theme is your sending it TO the same email address. If the spam filter on that inbox is weeding them out, you can send them with carrier pidgin and your not getting a thing. Try setting up a gmail account and sending the logs there. If they get through, and the ones sent to your ISP's email, you know your problem.

Maybe it is, every time I click send email I get the message that one was sent to the email I tell it to. I just never get them. I have tried different comcast and email addresses. SO I don't know what it could be. thought I have not tried from same email to same email.

OK that didn't work either. does anyone have this feature working and if so what are your settings ie port, server, authenticate yes or no?

I'm unable to get this feature to work. I just went and setup everything in the E-mail Settings, but when I try to e-mail the log, it says "E-mail notification is not enabled".

What the heck? 1.22NA firmware. It was happening on 1.22NA b8 as well, so I updated to the official 1.22NA firmware, but still the same thing.

I've already disabled E-mail Notification and re-enabled it. Still telling me it's not enabled.

Just set mine up in litterly 20 seconds.

Check off "Enable Email Notification"

From: <Email address from your ISP>
To: Any email address
SMTP Server: From your ISP. (See previous posts)
SMTP Server Port: 25
Enable Authentication: No

Save settings.

Your router will always be connected to your modem, so it will always be in the domain of your ISP. And no DHCP using ISP I know of "requires" Password verification for outgoing email. Nevermind SSL. You can set that up, but if you don't need to, then why? Basically, if your desktop will work with these settings, then your router will as well. The smtp server can't even tell the difference between your router and your computer.

Thanks, but still I get nothing with comcast. I guess I might to call them later today and see if they can point me in the right direction.

I will ask a friend of mine who works for Comcast. If you call, ask them to confirm these settings:

Check off "Enable Email Notification"

From: Youremail@comcast.net
To: Anyemail@email.com.
SMTP Server: Mail.comcast.net
SMTP Server Port: 587
Enable Authentication: Yes
Account Name: Youremail (do not put @comcast.net)
Password: Yourpassword
Re-enter: Yourpassword

For convience sake, use a gmail for the "To" line.  That way, no matter what, the email will go through. Just be sure to check the spam folder as well. Also, you would want to use your actual email and username, these are just examples.

The only thing that would keep this from working is if Comcast required SSL on their SMTP, which they say they don't as long as your in their network.

Well I asked my Comcast friend, and she agrees, those settings below should work, with two possible exceptions:

1. Your email has been blacklisted. (Too much outgoing email, spamm, virus, etc)
2. Your putting in the wrong password.

So the easiest way to check both is to sign in here https://login.comcast.net/login?s=wnamp&ts=64cbecc7 with the username and password you intend to use in the FROM line. Then send a test email to the email you want to use in the TO line. Don't trust any password saved to your computer. Manually type them in. Then check to see if you got them. That has to work.
