DNS-343 stuck at "system is booting...."
« on: November 09, 2010, 09:21:00 PM »

I have 4 NAS units.. 2xDNS-343 and 2 different competitor's units...

This morning we had a power failure.  Each of my units is connected to a UPS, and all set up to do gracefull shutdowns, and stay off even when power comes back.  However this evening I came home, turned on my UPS units in order to power the NAS units. and 1 of my DNS-343 units is STUCK at the "system is booting..." message with the dots scrolling constantly but never ends...  My second DNS-343 unit and other units came up fine.

To my surprise, this unit, when plugged in, Automatically powers up without even pressing the power button, which is strange.. Normally you plug it in, and then press the power button to power it up.

I've tried everything I could think of.. I removed the drives, pressed the RESET button for 10+ seconds, unplugged the network, and still nothing..  As soon as it is plugged in, the OLED comes up with the Dlink Logo, then it switches to "system is booting..." with the dots rolling, but doesn't do much.  Even the network link doesn't come up.. The link light on my switch stays off :(  I even swapped the power supplies between this unit and my other unit, in case the power supply had a partial failure, but no difference...

The data on the drives is intact, since I installed them in my second DNS-343 and it came up with no issues, and all data is safe..

Anyone have any ideas ?
The unit has been running firmware 1.04b03 for a few months now, so it is definatlely not due to a bad flash..

The unit is just under a year old, but I would rather not have to dig through my drawers looking for the invoice, and having to ship it in for a replacement if there is some way to reset it..

Thnx in advance..

System is booting....

If all else fails (and the product is still under warranty) you should consider calling D'Link support.  I called D'Link for issues related to another product and they only required the serial number on the back of the unit (not a receipt) and the date of purchase.  To speed things up, you can authorize credit card payment to immediately ship a second unit before you send back the defective DNS-343.

Well, i called, call got escalated, and they had me try everything I had already tried, but I guess they have no choice.

Now they sent me link to fill out RMA form, but second page asks to upload scanned copy of invoice/proof of purchase... I guess I have to go searching now...  I guess I'll search on the weekend to see if I can still find it...

Thnx

OK, found my invoice, and processed everything and got my RMA early last week.

Packed my unit up in original box, wrapped in brown kraft paper, and mailed it using regular Canada Post Parcel post this past Friday at 4pm, from Montreal to Mississauga.  I used regular RMA service (no advance anything), since I was in no rush.

All I have to say is WOW!!!  Canada Post was pretty quick, and Dlink must have received my package on Monday morning, and they mailed me out a refurbed one that same day (expedited delivery).  And I just received it this morning (Tuesday) around 9:30am.  Not even 2 full business days from the time I mailed it to the time I got my exchange, is pretty impressive in my book.

Only other company so far that has done better, was HP.  They advance shipped me a replacement laptop hard drive on a Saturday, and I received it on Monday, and they included a return shipping sticker and they picked up the return shipping costs.  They even called me on the Monday at noon,  to confirm I had received my package.

I don't know if I was just lucky, but I am pleased with the service.

I updated the firmware to 1.04, put in 4 new drives, and it is currently formatting.

Thnx Dlink.
