Can't Play Divx Video
« on: September 19, 2008, 02:35:18 PM »

My setting is DNS 323 (fw 1.05) with DSM 510 (fw 1.08) over a wired network. DSM 510 can play Xvid (in avi) but not Divx (in avi). The screen shows "format is not supported".

Please help!

Thanks!

Can you play the DivX file if stored locally on your PC? If the answer is "No", then download and install the DivX codec. Windows does not play them natively.

On a side note (that may not necessarily be related to your problem):

If you're trying this out on a PC and are using the DivX Player itself, keep in mind it isn't the greatest software out there.  When I play a .divx or .avi file with DivX Player over a network drive or UNC path, it takes an amazingly long time to start playing the movie.  The longer the movie, the longer the delay. For a two hour movie, I once let it sit for over an hour and a half before the DivX Player actually played the file.

Should you have trouble on a PC, you can install ffdshow-tryouts from sourceforge.net & haali splitter (also called matroska splitter.. Google it) so you can playback DivX/XviD content in Windows Media Player - and it will play instantly with no delay.  After installing ffdshow-tryouts & haali, you can also reconfigure Winamp's DirectShow plugin to play .avi, .divx, .mp4 files as well which removes delays in playing those types of files from the DNS-323.

I can play the video file on PC with VLC and Media Player Classic from the DNS 323 as file server.

Don't know if this will help but did you try installing the K-lite codec pack. I swear by that. Wired, I can play anything from the DNS-323, over my Wifi nothing -- can't get it working for the life of me wireless and using Vista!

Had no problems playing video with K-lite and Windows Media Player classic. Alternative, try the KMPlayer, the best media player I've ever used, especially with torrents and playing video files spread over networks.

I think most have missed the question he asked which is a DNS-323 NAS streaming to a DSM-510 media player.

The easiest way to check if this is a DNS-323 issue or the codec issue in the file is to copy the file to a usb thumb drive or hard drive and plug it directly into the DSM-510. If the file still will not play then it is a codec/media player issue. However if it does play this means that the UPNPAV server in the DNS-323 is not recognizing the AVI file type as divx.
