This upsets me because I am one of those consumers who thought RAID configuration was the perfect backup as D-LINk and probably other manufactures lead on to say it is. The time it takes to backup something on another drive is painfully slow.  I'll have to read up on how to backup to another drive.  Does an image work rather than physically copying the data? (sorry to be off topic here)

Whenever data is stored on the same logical storage (e.g. RAID 5) , if the logical storage completely fails, then all data is vulnerable to perminent loss.  RAID 5 provides redundancy for a physical HDD failure (i.e. multiple ways to recover from hardware failures), but doesn't backup your data.  The safest way is at least 2 separate devices.

Are you referring to a disk image (e.g. Norton Ghost) or mirror?
