I think posting a full message here instead of responding to other people's negative experience with the DWA-552 wireless N adapter would be better for everyone here.

So, first things first, hardware used....

D-Link DWA-552 Xtreme N Desktop Adapter (driver 1.60 11/05/2009)

D-Link DAP-1360 Wireless N Range Extender (Firmware 1.02 Oct 09/2009 )

D-Link DIR-655 Xtreme N Gigabit Router (Firmware 1.34NA 5/20/2010)

Internet Speed: 10Mb/sec DL 1 Mb/sec Upload
Operating system: Windows 7 Ultimate X64
Browser: Firefox version 3.6.6

I don't have to post everything just what's important.

I don't know why people are having problems with this card, as it has been a real performer, incredible speeds downloading and uploading (depends on your internet connection), and can carry a fairly strong signal and distance (even through walls, hallway).

I updated the firmware, set-up the DIR-655, and entered my settings where is was mostly compatible for everyone is the house (couldn't pick WPA2 cause some people are still using Windows XP ??? [get with it people make the move to Windows 7] which requires SP3 *Service Pack 3* for WPA2 to work).

Once that was done, I configured the DAP-1360 by using WPS (Wi-Fi Protected Set-up), synced the DAP-1360 Extender to the DIR-655, and made sure the settings on the DAP-1360 matched exactly the same settings on the DIR-655.

I installed the DWA-552, with 1.60 drivers, used WPS (Wi-Fi Protected Set-up) to connect (soooo much easier) and bang, connected in less than 20 seconds.

Getting full signals from the DWA-552 (thanks to the DAP-1360 Extender) and everything works perfectly, as I look over - 300Mbps (Wireless Network Connection Status).

So people, have a little patience, and basic know how, and you will enjoy the DWA-552 instead of scratching your head wondering what you did wrong.

If you have any questions, assuming I'm free, I'll try to help out any way I can:)

I tried to make this post as specific as possible to help out people, assuming they may have the same setup, or close to it.

Ciao

Thanks for trying to help us all out.
I've tried working with tech support but still have issues.
Using 655 router with the 1360 repeater.
macbook, macmini, ipad, iphone, roku soundbridge connecting

Have done both the wizard setup as suggested and manual setup - consider myself an advanced user.

Current situation is:
everything works well when connected to the 655. Once we depend on the 1360 repeater, only the ROKU works as it is using B. All G/N connections initially connect and then time out.

from other posts, this seems to be the common problem - any suggestions would be great. Dlink only sends it onto advanced tech support at this point which leaves me high and dry.

make sure that on the DIR-655 settings are exactly the same as the DAP-1360

To log in DIR-655 type 192.168.0.1 for the DAP-1360 type 192.168.0.50

Let's say the DIR-655 (in your case should be mixed wireless 802.11 N, 802.11 G, and 802.11 B)
disable auto channel scan and pick any channel between 1-11
transmission rate set to best(automatic)
channel width set to auto 20/40 MHz
enable wireless check
visibility status set to enable
wireless security mode set to WPA- personal
WPA mode: WPA
cipher type: AES
group key update interval: 3600
pre-shared key : ************** (anything you choose) remember it's cap sensitive

Tools>Time
Make sure the time is correct and the time zone set to manual (I prefer manual)
Save, and reboot the DIR-655 router

For the DAP-1360 make sure you set-up this router with exactly the same settings as the DIR-655 (using the set-up wizard)...select Repeater, and the rest I'm sure you know how to do.
Save, and reboot (and make sure the time and/or the time zone is correct on both routers).

Hope this helps:)

Some additional information:

1. For those that are linking MAC-addresses to IP-addresses and shorter IP-ranges (subnetting), note the following important information:
- make sure that the MAC-address of the DAP-1360 is well configured on the DIR-655
- make sure that the IP-address assigned to the DAP-1360 is in the subnet of the DIR-655

Example: you are using 192.168.158.1 with subnet 255.255.255.224 (allowing a maximum of 32 ip addresses including broadcast and network), the ip-address of the DAP-1360 should be between 192.168.158.2 and 192.168.158.30.

2. IMPORTANT note: the channel of both equipment need to be fixed (not automatic) and equal - if not you are loosing your connection from one or the other device every 5 minutes or so.

Last but not least: any access control configured on the DIR-655 will not be applicable if that same device is connected via the repeater DAP-1360. OK, you can also configure access controls on the DAP-1360, but however, it is not that configurable as on the DIR-655 (no time dependencies). On the DAP-1360, you can either disable access control, accept or reject connections from particular MAC-addresses, whereas on the DIR-655, you can allow connections from 8am-5pm etc.

Good luck.

Adding this information that that in another post (entitled "DAP 1360 works like a charm") gets the job done. The other post basically advocates reserving IP addresses on your DIR 655 for all your devices and adding your device MAC addresses manually to the DAP 1360.

The DAP 1360 can be finicky, and I've been fighting it for a loooooong time, but now it's working great.

I've followed both the post and I would like some feed back as I have a couple of questions. I running Mepis 11, KDE 4 Debian based Linux. I have WICD installed to manage the wireless. WICD shows 2 instances of my wireless. Does anyone know if this is correct? The DAP-1360 is set up as a repeater.

I'm using 192.168.0.50 for the DAP-1360, firmware ver 2.10
192.168.0.1 for the DIR-655 , firmware 1.33NA

The link drops and  I have to go into WICD and try and reconnect each time. It can take up to a minute to load a web page.

Now I dual boot this computer with Reboot(Windows) 7. It too drops the connection, but there only show one instance of my wireless network.

Any thoughts? Suggestions?

If you need more info, please ask.

EDIT: Just had the same problem with a Macbook Pro. Wireless dropped and had very had time to get it back. Ended up standing next to the router to get it to work. Again there shows 2 of my wireless networks.

Is there any special requirement on the distance between the DIR-655 and the DAP-1360?
