Power Failure
« on: December 04, 2011, 07:22:18 AM »

It seems everytime i have a power failure I have a hard time establishing an Internet connection with this router. I have the latest firewar version on the 4500 and my modem is a Bell(Canada) 2-wire modem. I unplug all power to the modem and router, I wait 1minute power up the modem, wait for all lights to turn on and stay on. I then power up the router. I sometimes takes me 2-3 tries of powering up the router to get it to go "online" other times it takes me 10-20 times of unplugging the power to the router and plugging it back in to go from offline to online. Other than that I have no other issues when I have Online status on the router. Am i doing something wrong? any suggestions.

You may want to try disconnecting then reconnecting the coax cable wire from the modem while you wait the minute during the powering up procedure.

Also, some cable modems will have a "reset all defaults" or similar button.  This button is a virtual one on the Motorola modems.  If your modem doesn't have that feature, and the above suggestions don't work, I would try leaving it unplugged for a few more minutes then powering it back up.

My bet is that your modem is remembering old settings and is confusing the router when it tries to connect.

Worst case scenario is that you may have to reconfigure your router.  It could be that there's some corrupted settings there.

Edit to add: My Charter cable issued UBEE is very forgiving with routers in that I don't have to power cycle it but my Motorola SB6120 is not quite as forgiving.  Sometimes it requires a restart and sometimes it doesn't.

Also swap out cables between modem and router. Sometimes they are not made well.
Make sure your ISP cable lines are good and signal is good going to the ISP Modem. Sometimes bad lines or having too many T.V. line splitters will reduce signal going to the modem. Sometimes ISP modems are low budget and not the best. Might upgrade modem to a Motorola SB 6121 if you can.

Some things to try:
Ensure DNS IP addresses are being filled in under Setup/Internet/Manual?
Turn off QoS options.
Turn off Advanced DNS Services if you have this option under Setup/Internet/Manual.
Turn on DNS Relay under Setup/Networking.
Setup DHCP reserved IP addresses for all devices on the router.
Ensure devices are set to auto obtain an IP address.
Set Firewall settings to Endpoint Independent for TCP and UDP.

What wireless modes are you using?
Try single mode G or mixed G and N?
Preferred is WPA-Personal. WPA2/Auto TPIK and AES.

Not a bad idea, they can be had for under $80, IIRC.

Glad it worked out, Roc!
