DGS-1005G 5-Port Switch..?
« on: May 01, 2012, 12:09:24 PM »

I would like to string an ethernet cable from one of the DIR-655 ports (upstairs) to the basement.

Is the DGS-1005G required for the proper installation of two (or more) computers in the basement?

I guess I'm wondering whether or not the DSG-1005G will work via a single port on the DIR-655.  Are the two devices fully compatible?

If I'm correctly thinking about this, the 5-Port Switch should allow me up to five wired connections in the basement.

I'm just weighing my future expansion options.

Correct, I am connecting a similar router to an 8 port switch and it works GREAT! Just be sure to use a good quality cable like CAT-6. Depending on how far you are going, RF can get into the router causing it to lock up/crash. If your ham station interferes at all with telephones/TV's, it will do the same thing to Ethernet. My D-link has been great in a high RF environment with very long CAT-6 runs and a 2nd story radio room(1.5KW SSB while surfing), but with cheap Ethernet cable that was NOT the situation.

Hope that helps!

Thanks for the quality feedbacks.

Cable length: 50 to 75 feet.  I will use a quality CAT6 cable, although I'm uncertain of where locally to buy it from.  Another radio amateur mentioned that Menards hardware store sells everything that I need for the installation aside from the switch.  I just don't know whether Menards carries quality cable.  I just hope the DIR-655 ethernet port has "juice" enough to handle that length from the router to the switch.  From what I've read, the switch itself is adaptive to the cable's length.

Where should I buy the switch from?  This afternoon on my way to work, I looked at OfficeMax for the D-Link switch.  No luck finding it there, although I saw the Netgear 5-Port.  At this point in time, I lean in favor the D-Link product.

Just out of curiousity, how much buffer RAM is inside of the DIR-655 ? ? ?

Switch - you can look at Newegg or Tigerdirect, both have been good for me.

Cables- monoprice.com has good priced cables that are top quailty, Furry had another place too that he recommended for cables.

I just hope the DIR-655 ethernet port has "juice" enough to handle that length from the router to the switch.

Mine went 100FT to a switch at 100Mbps without a problem, the switch was not Gigabit at the other end so no experience over 100FT or with Gigabit at that distance.

Had a 180FT long wire antenna at 1500Watts running parallel to the 100FT Cat-6 drop with only 30FT between the two without a hitch. Was always waiting for smoke when I got long winded, never happened. Router works great to this day, 4-5 years later.

The Rosewill brand Cat-6 from Newegg is what I am using, but there is proabally cheaper, they are just really close to me. Newegg carries the D-link switch too (D-Link makes a great switch, I have a 8-Port gigabit to expand my router), if not the cheapest they will be close, but check around on the cable price, sometimes vendors play games with the price. I usually but 10,000FT at a time of Belden, common to see vendors off as much as 300% from each other.

I'm truely amazed by the variety of bulk CAT6 cable.  It's an entire technology in itself, in my opinion.

The crimping tools that I found online are also expensive.

Plus, I don't have a continuity tester for once the connectors are crimped.

I have a radio friend who works for a rather large computer service.  I have to speak with him before I buy anything pertaining to the wiring; perhaps, if I'm lucky, he'll become willing to crimp and test the cable before I apply it to actual use.

I just won't feel comfortable doing the installation aside from running the "proper" cable.

This rather simple project has turned me into a chicken.

I'm also so cost sensitive that I can't afford to make mistakes.

I do however appreciate the feedback from you all on this forum.

Thanks and regards from Mark KF8RV.

I think your probably over complicating things too. Try not to over think or make to complicated. Cabling is easy. Keep with one category if you can. You can mixed 5e with 6. I use cat 6 as a back bone for all house internal cabling however there is some coming off my switch that is 5e and not a big deal. I upgraded several patch cables a couple of years ago for under $30 bucks just using patch cables. I bought 1000ft CAT 6 roll for $90.

Enjoy.
