iTunes Server - Hangs every time!
« on: April 29, 2012, 05:38:16 AM »

Hi All

Please help if you can, before i sell this DNS 320 / throw it out the window!

I'm trying to set up the iTunes server, in the hope that i'll be able to play music wirelessly on my iPad.

Every since I first owned the 320, it hangs around the 30-40% mark when building up my media library.  It locks the window in Sharecenter, won't allow me to navigate to it over my network, but still allows me to ping.  Every time i have to pull the plug on the box, do a reset and start over.  To date, I've not had it work successfully once in 18 months.  I've reported this to Dlink, but they don't answer for weeks, and when they do they're not interested in resolving my issue.

I'm now starting to wonder if it's an issue with a file that it's trying to scan / add that's causing it fall over and hang.  Either that or it's the size of my library (about 90GB, but I'm assuming that people here have managed this with success with equal or greater music collections).

Anyone got ideas at all?  The final idea i have is to split up my collection, and then scan them separately to try and determine if it is a file in there somewhere that it doesn't like (needle in a haystack!).

I would run a test by assigning the iTunes server to a folder which has a small number of folders/files contained within it.

Try accessing the shared iTunes files from iTunes on a PC or laptop also. The previous beta f/w did not work with the latest iTunes app but the latest beta does.

My library is 160GB of Alac files

If you believe a rogue file is the issue then the most effective way of locating it may well be to keep splitting your library by 50% e.g. by all artists beginning with letters A-M and N-Z, identify the batch which contains the problem, split that batch 50-50 and repeat until you find the rogue file (binary chop method). Alternatively try to identify any odd file type or extremely large files in your media folders.

Accessing the music isn't an issue, as it's never completed building the library.

I've removed all music labelled "F" in my structure to see what happens.

Okay - only attempted to build up a library of part of my music A to E, and it still died at 34%.  Having to pull the power again.   >:(

I really don't know what to try next.

Rebooted the 320 and progress shot up to 42%, but has hanged again.  Is it normal for the webpage to hang, and for the 320 to be inaccessible whilst building the library?

Yes - I am pretty sure it is.

Have you tried this using just a few albums?

I tried with 1 album, which worked fine.  I then tried with approx 750 albums (about a fifth of all my collection) and it hung.

What is the longest time you have allowed the Sharecentre to index the files? I recall that this took a very long time on mine - many hours - maybe over a day. I couldn't access the web interface during this time.

I remember when i tried this about a year ago i left it on for at least a day and it still didn't work.

However, i think i've resolved the issue - FINALLY!

My normal naming convention for music is to have a folder per artist, and then album folders beneath that level. I had some folders in my music named Compilations, into which i had more sub-level folders by genre (eg. Compilations/Christmas).  I think it was this folder structure that was screwing up the library build.

I've removed these to another separate folder to sort later, but it has now successfully scanned all of my remaining music, within 45 minutes.

The issue i now have is how to access this music on my Ipad.  My iTunes Sharecenter has been pulling down the music for over an hour now.

Out of interest, how do people configure iTunes with their DNS 320's to organise and see their music.  I've set mine in the iTunes preferences Media folder location to the music folder on my DNS 320, and also checked for iTunes to keep it organised.

Will this enable the Sharecenter to work in iTunes, and for my Ipad to be able to see it?  At moment on my Ipad i an only see a few artists and albums - plus it's pulling in some random audio tracks from my PC tat i don't want.

Glad you have got a bit further. I can't help with the iPad issue as I haven't got one.

As far as configuring the 320 in iTunes - I don't think that there is much you can do. The Share Centre's name should appear under the "Shared" section in the LH panel in iTunes. Click on it, enter your password and your music will appear after a pause - no album art - just a list of music files which can be sorted as you wish. To clarify, when using the iTunes server facility within the 320, this is intended to stream the music rather than download it.

turns out iTunes 10.6 doesn't work with the DNS 320.

10.4 works fine, but son as i plug in the Ipad it needs 10.5.

Wasted an entire afternoon on this..........    :-\
