Problem with DIR-655 and local connections
« on: May 02, 2009, 07:20:52 PM »

Hello,

I am experiencing a severe problem with my DIR-655. One that has been ongoing for a very long time and was never able to isolate -- until today I have finally pinpointed and been able to reproduce the problem reliably. The problem exists when my computers try to communicate with on another on the local network. Things like windows file sharing and accessing some other services work fine. However, with several programs the connection between two computers on the local network is refused/times out. One example is an open-source program called Synergy. This program allows sharing a single mouse and keyboard over multiple computers on a local network. This program uses a computers name to locate/connect over the network (and not IP addresses). In this scenario I will call them "Computer A" and "Computer B".  I have reset the DIR-655 settings to default and gone through the 'automatic' setup process. When the router is NOT connected to the internet (under the status tab [in router firmware] the WAN connection is not established) the computers communicate properly -- however,  as soon as the WAN connection is established the computers will not connect (the connection attempt times out). If I go back to my routers firmware page and click "Release" (under the Status tab and under WAN) the connection will work just fine again.  Also, the problem does not exist if I replace the DIR-655 with my older Netgear router. Please note that I have experienced this problem under several versions of the firmware and am currently running the latest release. This particular application I used in the scenario is NOT the only one that exhibits this behavior. I believe it is safe to say that my computers settings are not to blame given the evidence presented above. I would GREATLY appreciate input on this problem and a potential explanation of what might be happening and a workaround.

Many thanks,
Jack

It seems this program is trying to use DNS for the name resolution.
If the DIR is connected, it passes all DNS requests to the DNS server of your provider but your private addresses are not known there.
If not connected at least Windows uses NetBIOS for name resolution which will work for all internal addresses.

Possible fix:
1. Disable TCP/IP V6 on all computers (if used)

2. Open the properties of the LAN connection TCP/IP (V4) - Properties
Click the Advanced Button and highlight the WINS Tab. Change the NetBIOS settings to "Enable NetBIOS over TCP/IP"

If this doesn't help, edit on the Computer running the program the hosts. file in the windows\system32\drivers\etc directory:

Enter each computername with corresponding internal address according to the example given in the file.

Look into the settings of your program whether you can change the search for other computers from DNS to NetBIOS or something else (I would try this first)

Hope this helps

Netbios issue. There are some extra settings on the DIR that might help.

Unicasting enabled => http://192.168.0.1/Basic/WAN.shtml
Extra Netbios (if you use DHCP that is) => http://192.168.0.1/Basic/Network.shtml

If you have the DIR as an AP the issue is with the DHCP device (internet gateway)
