Hello,
I am experiencing a severe problem with my DIR-655. One that has been ongoing for a very long time and was never able to isolate -- until today I have finally pinpointed and been able to reproduce the problem reliably. The problem exists when my computers try to communicate with on another on the local network. Things like windows file sharing and accessing some other services work fine. However, with several programs the connection between two computers on the local network is refused/times out. One example is an open-source program called Synergy. This program allows sharing a single mouse and keyboard over multiple computers on a local network. This program uses a computers name to locate/connect over the network (and not IP addresses). In this scenario I will call them "Computer A" and "Computer B". I have reset the DIR-655 settings to default and gone through the 'automatic' setup process. When the router is NOT connected to the internet (under the status tab [in router firmware] the WAN connection is not established) the computers communicate properly -- however, as soon as the WAN connection is established the computers will not connect (the connection attempt times out). If I go back to my routers firmware page and click "Release" (under the Status tab and under WAN) the connection will work just fine again. Also, the problem does not exist if I replace the DIR-655 with my older Netgear router. Please note that I have experienced this problem under several versions of the firmware and am currently running the latest release. This particular application I used in the scenario is NOT the only one that exhibits this behavior. I believe it is safe to say that my computers settings are not to blame given the evidence presented above. I would GREATLY appreciate input on this problem and a potential explanation of what might be happening and a workaround.
Many thanks,
Jack
