LAN issues with using DIR-825 as a WiFi AP/ethernet hub...
« on: June 19, 2013, 12:58:54 PM »

Hello.

I have an old DIR-825 that I'm using as a basic WiFi AP and ethernet hub. I'm not using and of the router functionality of the device for establishing a connection to the internet, firewall, port-forwarding, etc.

- Nothing is plugged into the WAN port.
- LAN port 1 has a Cat6 ethernet cable running back to the main router.
- LAN port 2 has a Cat6 ethernet cable running to a desktop computer (acting as a File Server).
- WiFi is enabled (both bands) with a couple laptops connected.

The primary router has a couple desktop computers attached to it. WiFi is enabled on it for testing purposes (see below).

The problem is, I'm having an issue where the computers attached to the primary router can't talk to the server attached to the D-Link 825.

I did notice that wireless devices connected to the D-Link 825 via WiFi could connect to the server though, so that got me thinking it's a communications issue on the 825. To test, I enabled (temporarily) WiFi on the router. Connected the same wireless devices to it and they immediately lost touch with the server. Connected them back to the 825, there was the server again.

Testing from behind the 825 (i.e., from the server connected to the 825 to computers attached to the router) has no issue—communication isn't an issue in that direction. It's only communication going from pre-825 to behind the 825 that's the issue. It's almost like there's a LAN-based firewall on the 825 (which doesn't make any sense).

Anyway, I'm going to try and swap out the 825 with an older LinkSys I have kicking around somewhere to be sure the 825 is the problem, but while I do that, thought I'd post here and see if anyone had any suggestions?

Thanks,
Kristin.

Link>Welcome!
  • What Hardware version is your router? Look at sticker under router.
  • Link>What Firmware version is currently loaded? Found on routers web page under status.
  • What region are you located?

Have you reviewed this? Turning a router into an AP.

How are you attempting to connect to the devices on either side? Mapping using host names or IP addresses? I usually use \\ipaddress to map to shares on my file server if connected to my wired AP on my system here.

And, there isn't a LAN firewall specifically on the LAN side. The Firewall should be disabled anyways on the 825 along with ALL other features accept for WiFi.

Hardware = B1
Firmware = 2.09 NA (same issue with earlier firmware)
Location = North America (Canada)

I've done all the typical stuff, as per that article, for converting to an AP (though, I'm also using as a hub to extend ethernet). The only thing I'm not sure of in that article:

"The LAN ports on the router cannot accept a DHCP address from your other router."

I assume that means the LAN ports directory, correct? But, DHCP should pass-through on the LAN ports, no? I've never done this/tested though (as the server attached uses a static IP).

Anyway—I'm testing for a connection via a number of different methods:

PING, AFP, FTP, etc. and as well, via CrashPlan (as the server was to act as an internal CrashPlan server).

Maybe I'll install DD-WRT on it and see if that clears things up (the device the 825 is replacing was running DD-WRT, and there wasn't any issues before I swapped in the 825).

Yes, DHCP and everything should pass thru in either direction and should work well with or with out WRT.

Yea, I'll pop the old LinkSys back in when I get home tonight and if that clears things up, then I'll go from there...

I would also do a factory reset on the 825 and run thru that sticky to be sure that you've got it set up well. Then re-test.

What Mfr model is your main host router?

Main router is an ASUS RT-N16 running the latest Tomato. No issues with the router as this was all fine pre-825. Just incorporated the 825 for 5Ghz (previous AP was 2.4 only). 825 was reset to factory after the 2.09 firmware upgrade (hadn't used it in about a year, so needed the firmware upgrade to fix the 2013 date issue) and set up from scratch (reviewed the sticky and didn't miss anything).

Anyway, like I said, I'll see if I can swap the old LinkSys back in and see what happens from there.

Thanks!
Kristin.

Possible something isn't getting from the N16 side to the 825.

Keep us posted.  ;)
