Firmware 1.21NA
« on: July 01, 2009, 03:16:31 PM »

I have an A1 version of this router and just lick everyone else I am experiencing the lockup and random reboot issues. It became unbearable so I went and bought a Linksys WRT54GL and put DD-WRT on it so I could at least get close to the same functionality as my DGL-4500. I have been following the forum and waiting for a firmware fix but as everyone knows it hasn't happened yet. I decided yesterday that I would try out the new firmware 1.21NA and see how its coming along (last I loaded was 1.15) So I reset the router loaded the firmware and I know it probably seems dumb but I decided to disable the wireless to test how it runs (I know defeats the purpose of a wireless router but it seems to work). I disabled wireless, made a DHCP reservation for my Desktop and Xbox 360, disabled gamerfuel, unchecked enable SPI, and then wired up my network which consist of two 360s, two PC's, my HDTV, and gigabyte switch. It hasn't been down for 8hrs and 7min which is far longer than anytime I have experienced since I left firmware 1.02. I am going to test wireless up time and such when I get back from my 4th of July trip but just though I would put my 2 cents in to see if it helps to solving this issue any. If the lock ups and reboots were thought to be caused by an overload on the hardware wouldn't it be the same with all these items running on a wired network as opposed to a wireless. I'm no expert but I'm sure the how this router doesn't get the best airflow doesn't help with the lockups. The only other issue I am having is the streaming of media from Windows Media Player to the Xbox 360s works fine with my linksys but when I plugged my D-link back in Media Player sees the Xbox I can add it but when I go to the Xbox and connect to PC it doesn't find my PC. I use McAfee Antivirus and Firewall and UPnP and windows media and streaming is all allowed nothing changed from when it was working except the routers being switched any ideas?

Hope This Helps,
RC

I still insist the lockups are caused by overheating. I've made several test, and for me, everything points at overheating.
Just raise the router about 2" off your desktop, and you'll see it doesn't lockup.

I had a similar issue but I have my router (rev a1) hanging on a wall under an AC vent so it's always cold.  I got mine to stop locking up by removing the xbox from the network. i posted this issue early today before i saw this thread.  I'm starting to see a trend.

Ok I have done a little more testing and here is what its like so far. I have wireless on and no lock ups have occurred so that seems to rule out any issues in that department since it has been going for over a week now. I have put the wireless adapter on my Xbox 360 Pro Which is in a bedroom which is directly behind where the router is. I also have my wife’s laptop connected wirelessly. I have provided a layout of what and how my network is connected below. I have also been mucking around with some of the settings to see the results of enabling and disabling some of the routers features. When I enabled Gamerfuel there were no restarts but the rest of my network slowed down except for the Xbox 360 Elite Windows PC internet became useless to slow to really use same deal with enabling gaming rule for Xbox live, that being said I left both disabled. I have set up a rule for bit torrent though and no real affect on the rest of the network except for of course torrents speed up and with lots of them Xbox live speeds become a bit laggy and party chats will drop periodically. I also wanted to set my windows pc up for remote log in I have that configured correctly but at the same time I wanted to try out Open DNS. Open DNS was to slow for me for some reason it would take much longer to load web pages so I shifty back off of it. Everything is currently running now lock ups no restarts so I am pleased with this firmware update thus far. Of course if you read other posts you will see some of the other problems with this firmware people are having such as shorter wireless ranges and it would be nice to be able to use some of these other features with no slow down to the network but hey its working for me right now and hopefully this will help with fixing some of the other firmware issues with the features now. If there are any similar experiences please post.

I started using MAC filtering with no security, and my router stays up for weeks. On occasion, I do have to power cycle it because it stops passing data via wireless (wired still works) - but this is seriously like once in 3 months.

I was thinking it was thermal too, but I don't anymore. It sure seems to me that at least some of the problem is in the wireless security code.

I haven't felt the need to move past 1.12.
