Strange OS X 10.5.8 behavior
« on: October 04, 2009, 11:58:19 AM »

I have "mapped" my DNS-323 on my OS X install by moving the icon for the mounted volume in the "login items" of System Preferences/Accounts.

It worked just fine for a week, but today it started being erratic. I can't mount the DNS-323 anymore using Finder/Connect to server, though I can still see it and access it under the "Shared" pane, or connect to the UI through Safari.

It's a bit annoying; I have my own reasons for using it as a permanently mounted volume. Any idea?

I had a similar problem.  What I did was create all my shares under the principle volume.
E.g. volume_1\public , Volume_1\user\userdrive,  etc.  I then permissioned myself to
mount Volume_1.  I only mount volume_1, and all subordinate directories are available
of course.  This is with leopard 10.5.2.  Unfortunately, the DNS-323 does not work with
Snow Leopard 10.6.1, and Apple say's it is DLINk's implementation.  So I purchased a
Thus 4100Pro, 4 drive unit that people reported worked fine with both Leopard and
snow leopard, and life is good.

But that is how I resolved using leopard 10.5.2.  You basically have access to the
entire volume, this verses having to mount multiple shares which would seem to
time-out, and I had the same results you had.

Hope this helps.

Thanks for your reply, though I don't understand it. I don't get what this means:

What I did was create all my shares under the principle volume.

mount Volume_1.  I only mount volume_1, and all subordinate directories are available

By the way, I've seen lots of people having issues with Snow Leopard, but I have successfully mounted the DNS-323 on my roommate's MacBook Pro running 10.6.1.

Well, it's getting more interesting. The mounted volume shows on the desktop, but not on the Finder sidebar or in the Open/Save application dialog. I doubt that D-Link is at fault here...

My 10.6.1 finds volume1 properly and lets me move files in and out.
What I have found is that the Mac cpu overheats and causes problems. If you install a program "smcfancontrol" (google it) you can set the fan speeds and see the cpu/gpu temps. They should stay under ~50c.
