I had a similar problem. What I did was create all my shares under the principle volume.
E.g. volume_1\public , Volume_1\user\userdrive, etc. I then permissioned myself to
mount Volume_1. I only mount volume_1, and all subordinate directories are available
of course. This is with leopard 10.5.2. Unfortunately, the DNS-323 does not work with
Snow Leopard 10.6.1, and Apple say's it is DLINk's implementation. So I purchased a
Thus 4100Pro, 4 drive unit that people reported worked fine with both Leopard and
snow leopard, and life is good.
But that is how I resolved using leopard 10.5.2. You basically have access to the
entire volume, this verses having to mount multiple shares which would seem to
time-out, and I had the same results you had.
