Continually tinkering with the NAS, even without RAID involved, doesn't strike me as a particularly good idea. The risk of damage is certainly greater than never opening the unit.
One of my NAS units is in the basement in a cinder block enclosure to protect it, it goes months between me ever looking at it. The NDAS drives in the same enclosure have been there for several years, amazing how long stuff will run if you don't continually screw with it.

The only thing that is being "saved" here is the cost of another box, the drives are already being shuffled around.
I never said this wouldn't work, only that I consider it an unwise practice. Obviously, everyone is entitled to their opinion on the topic, so I'll stop beating this drum.
