Proposal: new backup application for DNS-323
« on: January 12, 2010, 11:13:54 PM »

As a very satisfied DNS-323 user - running FW 1.08b9 right now - I would like to add a proposal for a new application for the box. I think the new application interface (introduced with FW 1.08) is an extremely bright idea and takes the risk of having to deal with funplug / linux kernels / scripting languages and the like from the shoulders of us poor non-unix gurus  ::)

The available modules and applications (especially NFS I guess!) are very welcome, but what I really would like to see is an installable application which allows me to schedule backups of all of my data on the DBS-323. I have more than one NAS in use, so what I'm actually thinking of is an app, where I'm able to specify simply "what" kind of data and to "where" this should be backuped - and this could be another NAS box, an external USB harddisk on the DNS-323 USB connector or even another PC within my network.

Right now I cannot implement this without using funplug etc. I really would appreciate becoming independent of this kind of system administration...  :'(

Any word from the D-Link developers about a chance of seeing this in future??

I second this motion!

Some time ago I had a topic (http://forums.dlink.com/index.php?topic=10025.0) asking about doing backup from the dns-323 to an offsite ftp server some time ago. Your proposal sounds quite similar, so you are not alone with a need for this kind of feature.

I have found out that something of this nature can be accomplished with the third-party solution Fun_plug (http://wiki.dns323.info/howto:ffp) and Duplicity (http://duplicity.nongnu.org/) as documented by drak0 (http://www.drak0.com/2008/06/09/dns323-duplicity-encrypted-offsite-backup-bliss/).

I have, however, not tried this out yet as I'm first waiting for official release of 1.08 FW and whatever changes it brings to the solution above. Your idea about an application would be a much more elegant, not to mention user-friendly and safe method of accomplishing this  :)

Let's hope for the best,

Of course, Duplicity appears to be strictly applicable to Linux... :)

Great, at least I'm not alone!  ;)
Actually I'm not really asking for a super-duper sophisticated solution which requires at least a 150 page booklet of instructions.... What would be sufficient is simply an app where I specify which directory tree I want to backup and some kind of interface to input the target device/directory (very similar to the "network access" tab on the sys admin menu!). Being able to use an external USB harddisk would be the ultimate ratio.

So, D-Link don't spoil my dreams  ::)

Add my name to that list.  I also have a DNS-321 and have asked for the same thing for it.  So far there has been no response from Dlink.  Some said do it through your computer but that means I have to have a machine running which takes a lot more power. Dlink talks about green. Well, this would qualify as a green feature.

Another way that would allow this is to mount another network drive at the DNS323. That way backup can be made to that drive, wherever it may be.
