Can't see HughesNet modem behind router. Any ideas?
« on: August 22, 2010, 01:49:15 PM »

I have a wonderful D-Link DGL-4500 Gaming Router. Since I've moved to the sticks and my only "highspeed" option is satellite Internet, the gaming portion doesn't get a whole lot of use but it does allow me and my wife to use our service remotely and network our three laptops, two desktops and one XBox 360 together.

I've ran into one small snag though. The ip address for the HughesNet modem provided with my HughesNet service is 192.168.0.1, the same as the default ip for my router. This was no big deal. I just went into the settings and changed the router to 192.168.2.1

The only problem is that I cannot see my modem behind the router. When the service was being setup initially and I was connected directly to the modem, I could enter 192.168.0.1 and get the modem status page with no problems. It allows be to check throughput, modem status, monitor how close I am to my daily cap (man, I hate caps, especially tiny ones!). The problem started after I connected to modem to the router. Everything still works as far getting service and everything. I can connect to the Internet with no problems. I just can't see the modem status page at 192.168.0.1

I've checked and, as far as I can tell, absolutely nothing appears to be blocked by the firewall. It just times out when I try to go to the modem status ip. Several people mentioned "recycled the router to have it pick up new IP's". I don't see any such option but I would've thought this would've happened after one of my several reboots. Several people have mentioned that, since I can see the page when directly attached to the modem, but can't with the modem connected to the router, and since there seem to be no other ill effects, that it must be a router or firewall issue. I'm starting to agree with them but, for the life of me, I can't see anything wrong.

Any ideas? Anything I can provide that might make this any more clear so that someone might be able to help me? Thanks in advance to anyone that might be able to lend me a hand.

Sincerely,
- Byron Followell

You said the modem and the DGl 4500 came at the same IP of 192.168.0.1. So it conflicted until you changed the Dgl 4500 IP to 192.168.2.1, Correct? So by now you should be able to connect to your modem at 192.168.0.1 and connect to the Dgl 4500 at 192.168.2.1

As for helping you I first need to identify the problem by trouble shooting and asking you a bit of question, Unless some one on these forums know exactly how to solve this. But I don't think this is a big issue. Did you try clearing you internet browser? Using another browser?

Well, really there was never any direct conflict because I changed the IPs before I ever connected the two, but yes, they would've conflicted.

And, yes, I can enter 192.168.2.1 and get straight to my router setup. However, if I enter 192.168.0.1, I get nothing from the modem. The browser times out. I've tried FireFox and IE and cleared the histories on both. Same thing every time. I can only get to the modem status page if I connect directly to the modem. I've heard from other HughesNet users that this is not normal and that I should be able to see the modem but they all stated it was a router/firwall issue and pretty much left it at that. They didn't have anything else to offer since no one was familiar with my router.

I'm willing to try anything you might ask to troubleshoot the issue if no one else offers any advice. Thanks for offering.

Oh snap HughesNet is slow (No Offense) after carefully reviewing what you said before and after I have come to a conclusion that maybe HughesNet does not allow connection through a router. But that would make no sense since you should be able to connect to the modem from the Dgl 4500.

You said that some HughesNet users told you that this is not normal and might be firewall/router issues? Mhmm so base on that I have came up with a solution I am not saying it will work but if it does great.

Upon login into your Dgl 4500 (192.168.2.1 Not default but your setup) Navigate to ADVANCE > FIREWALL
Now simply input these settings into your router I have provided image for better understanding.

Since you changed the IP address of the router to a different net, You'll might try changed the routers IP address to keep the same addressing scheme, just change the last octet, i.e. 192.168.0.2 or up to 255. You should beable to keep the same subnet. Man I remember when I had Satellite. I don't miss it. Not sure if the modem can be bridged or not. Something tells me that it can't like DSL. Something you can ask the ISP. See if you can bridge the modem to the 4500. If not then, your going to be dealing with dual NAT'g and that will probably impact your gaming and some connections to servers. If you seem to experience this then I would put this device on the DMZ of the 4500 and see if that might help. Anyways, let us know if keeping the 4500 on the same IP address scheme just adjust the last number to something different.

Well I tested if your can access a gateway of the 4500 has a gateway that is of a differerent octev then your modems gateway; the answer is yes. My modem is 192.168.100.1, set 4500 to 192.168.200.1. Other then completly messing up all my rules and filters (doh!) It worked fine.

So first see if you can ping the 192 of your modem, even if you can't access it. And then check the logs of your router. If its blocking it, as long as you have all the log options enabled, it should show you blocking a ICMP packet. Now if you can ping it, but can't access it, most likly that has to do with the modems configuration, and only allowing access to it from computers in the same subnet perhaps.
