I hope this get's heard :(

I have posted on this forum a while back w/ my problem of frequent disconnections using this router,
http://forums.dlink.com/index.php?topic=14562.0

Cut to the story short, NO it's the the MODEM, no it's not FIRMWARE problem, no it's not Hardware fault.. AND it's KINDA the ISP but NOT REALLY..

YOu see, our ISP here are notorious for ping RTO's from time to time and it's been bad for the past few months...and with these RTO's come from time to time a chain of RTOs like:

Now, this is not me/my DSL modem getting disconnected from the ISP's network yet, as the DSL light is still ON .. it's just extreme LAG or RTO .. but the problem is the DGL-4500's detecting this as a DISCONNECTION (PPPoE type by the way).. BUT NO it's not a disconnect, it's merely RTO and 5 other routers w/ LOGGING turned ON does not conclude this as DISCONNECT, they just stand their ground stay conncted till the pings come back..

Now, while this is ok as the DGL 4500 is set to auto connect (PPPoE) the MAIN PROBLEM is  Bandwidth profling... because these RTOs, while it would cause log, are really not LONG ENOUGh to get me disconnected from my sessions (IM, logged in sessions, even gaming) , but since the router does this bandwidth profiling every new connection where in it RESTRICTS all internet access during the process of MEASURING my bandwidth, w/c takes anywhere from 5-15 seconds , this is the nail that seals the coffin on my current session....

So please, is there a way to STOP/DISABLE automatic bandiwdth profiling this router? I love this router but im gona have to return it if this doesnt get solved :(

Also, would increasing the TTL settings on the router keep it from concluding a CHAIN OF RTO as a DISCONNECTION?

Regards
TJ

Is Accept ping requests from internet turned on or off. I think it's under firewall. How is your DSL modem set up? Bridged to the 4500?

1. What are the details on that ping test? Is that from your PC to Modem? Router to website? Packet loss is packet loss, doesn't matter if you lose your lights on your modem. Actually, the only thing that would reset the modem is more the 8 T3's leading to a T4. If the packet loss has nothing to do with the modem, you will NEVER see it reset. Doesn't mean its not a problem you can ignore. Now if you don't want to troubleshoot the ACTUAL problem, carry on.

2. If the uplink measurement is causing you a problem, turn it off. Shown here in this emulator, just turn off "Automatic Uplink Speed" set it the closest match to your result with the router disabled, and turn on "xDSL or Other Frame Relay Network".

3. You can also go here and increase your "Maximum Idle Time"

4. Honestly, if your ISP is notorious for packet loss, you might want to think about getting a new ISP. Thats kind of like saying "this restraunt is notorious for having sucky food". It shouldn't be something you work around. But to each their own I guess.

PS. Why do you keep calling it RTO? Its never a acronym I have heard off. Did someone say it to you, or you just using it for conversational sake. I wonder if the ISP gave you "Its not our fault, call dlink" speach and used some big words to try to get you to believe they knew what they were talking about. Just sayin'.
