Hidden Folders, Undeletable Files, and Power!
« on: September 15, 2009, 09:13:11 AM »

Hello All,

Excellent forum; it's helped me out tremendously. I've purchased a handful of the DNS-323 units over the past year, and considering their price, they generally work fairly well. That being said, I have a couple of nagging issues that I've been unable to locate definitive answers on:

1. Folders that can not be deleted.

Every once in a while, a folder is created that although I can see, I cannot access or delete. I've tried with a small variety of MS operating systems & file manages with no success. Sometimes, they eventually disappear, but I'm getting an increasing amount 'dead' folders listed.

2. Cannot see or access certain folders.

Initially, I used SyncBack (2brightsparks.com) to transfer a couple of dozen folders to the DNS-323. Most copied correctly and are used daily. However, I (eventually!) noticed that a few folders weren't there. I thought I had missed them and attempted to recopy to absent folders, but received a 'folder already exists' error. So basically, I'm positive there's a folder (or at least directory entry) for:

\\192.168.1.200\Volume_1\1994

But cannot see or manipulate it in anyway. The DNS-323 has no user restrictions or quotas; everything is opened up. I've restored to system defaults following a couple of other posts, with no change. I've also tried a couple of different firmware versions (1.07 and 1.08).

Because of the amount of data, I'd prefer not to format & recopy.

Does anyone have any insight?

3. Power

Power failures are not uncommon where I reside. The fact that there's no 'hard' power switch, in my experience, is a design flaw. For this reason alone I'm considering an alternative. Does anyone have a possible work around solution?

Thanks in advance for everyone's time.

Plug the DNS-323 into a switched power strip.

mig,

Thanks for the reply, but perhaps I did not make the problem clear.

When the DNS-323 powers down due to a power failure, it does not power itself back up when the power resumes. Short of plugging it into a UPS that can endure the outage (not always an option), is there a setting or mechanism that can power the DNS-323 automatically when power is restored?

O.K. you are looking for power resume after UPS shutdown.  ::)

You need to have hardware version C1 and run D-Link fw v1.08b5 (beta)
Take a look at #42 on http://forums.dlink.com/index.php?topic=5485.0

Sorry, no experience with this feature, I have hardware A1.

Thanks for the info.

Unfortunately, like you, I don't have hardware version C1 either. I suppose it's encouraging news for any DNS-323 I may purchase in the future, but it does nothing for the handful of units I currently maintain. I'm assuming this is a hardware limitation and shouldn't hope for a update that effects versions A or B?

Any insight into the hidden yet inaccessible folders?

Oh i had the same problem, these files become stacked and are due to long paths, use the tool available at http://pathtoodeep.com ,it is a free tool which deletes and also searches such undeleteable files and also assists in installation and sharing of long pathed files

For the inaccessible files and folders, you could try fun_plug (http://wiki.dns323.info/howto:fun_plug) which would allow you to telnet/ssh into your DNS-323 and delete/modifiy files and folders manually.
